This planning process is employed by a diverse array of locales, from quaint towns nestled in rural areas to bustling metropolises housing millions (Urban Planning For Dummies). It plays a crucial role in both sustaining and enhancing community life by forecasting and molding the future landscape of an area—not only in terms of its physical attributes, such as the layout of roads, architectural styles, and green spaces but also in its functional aspects, like employment opportunities, environmental impact, and transportation systems. Moreover, urban planning enables communities to evaluate their current status and envision their future direction. It accommodates the unique dynamics of each locale, recognizing that cities evolve in varied ways based on factors such as population trends and transportation infrastructures. For instance, some cities may experience population growth and rely heavily on public transit systems, whereas others might face a decline in inhabitants and depend predominantly on vehicular traffic (Urban Planning For Dummies). The planning process not only assesses what modifications are necessary to improve community conditions but also provides a platform for residents to articulate their aspirations for their city's future. In essence, urban planning is fundamental to the deliberate development of communities. Here are some key types of urban planning concepts: *Strategic Urban Planning: This type focuses on setting high-level goals and determining desired areas of growth for a city or metropolitan area. The resulting strategic plan outlines objectives such as improving transportation, creating community spaces, enhancing citizens’ quality of life, and encouraging city visits or relocations. Strategic urban planning provides the overarching framework for other planning components. *City Planning: Narrower in scope than regional planning, city planning emphasizes the quality of life within a specific city. It involves managing various aspects, such as waste disposal, infrastructure development, and community services. City planning adapts regional policies to the unique context of a bordered city. *Neighbourhood Planning: While the exact definition of a neighborhood varies, this type of planning focuses on smaller-scale development. Neighbourhoods can be defined by boundaries or simply as municipal areas. Recently, the concept of neighbourhood planning gained traction, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of communities and local spaces. Antivola January 9, 2024 Urban planning in the Philippines should shift to environmental realities, says expert https://lnkd.in/gkuhW8q7 URBAN PLANNING in the Philippines must prioritize climate and geographical realities for holistic development, according to an expert. “Our political constructs of provinces and regions don’t fit with the natural constructs of the ridges of mountains, watersheds, and river systems,” Paulo G. Alcazaren, urban planner and landscape architect, said in an interview with BusinessWorld. When it comes to urban planning, he said it is important to consult economists, earth scientists, and physical planners and “just leave the politicians outside the door.” Mr. Alcazaren suggested the government delineate the country’s 16 major river systems into areas for comprehensive planning to effectively manage resources and mitigate climate impact. This will include benefits toward agricultural productivity, sustainable resource extractions, and proper expansion of urban settlements, he said. There are only about 7,000 environmental or urban planners in the Philippines, with limited skillsets in large-scale planning for towns and cities, according to Mr. Alcazaren. He also said that local government units have outdated or cut-paste comprehensive land use plans, alongside physical frameworks that lack sense when paired with private real estate development. “We are seeing a shift to focus on public infrastructure to address issues of mobility, specifically getting away from car-centric planning to mass transport,” he said. Mr. Alcazaren noted that Metro Manila only has one to two square meters of open, accessible space per person — below the World Health Organization standard of nine sqm per person.
