UTS Devlog #1: Night and Day Hello everyone, with the end of august this marks the end of the first year of development of Under the Skin! What started as just a pitch for my college final, has grown to a full fledge indie studio with over 20 talented artists and programmers hard at work making this a reality. I originally wanted to write up a large year-in-review post, but it was growing way too long, so instead I will be doing these Devlogs which will focus on a specific aspect of production to give each of my wonderful teammates the spotlight, as well as talking about problems we face in development and how we find solutions. First up I want to talk about our environments, headed by our talented environments lead Rachel Leimer. (https://lnkd.in/gY5HXKER) For those who don't know, Under the Skin is a visual novel, meaning we need a lot of backgrounds. Further more, the story of the game takes place over several in game days and over different times of the day, meaning we would need variants of each background, greatly increasing the workload. This is a problem obviously when working on a low budget indie game, as we are limited on the hands on deck when drawing up backgrounds. However, Rachel has devised a system of layers and lighting effects within our drawing program to completely change each background to whichever time of day or weather we need with a click of a button. This saves us a lot of time not having to redraw or reapply any layers. This is great because having this variance in the backgrounds lets us make each in game day in the story feel unique, and also subtly gives the player visual ques on what day or part of the story they're at on replays, something that I think is important in a visual novel. Rachel is not just a great artist, her production experience has made this project so much more smoother as she has been able to make the pipeline for each background so much easier for new artists joining the team by creating an easy to understand and efficient backgrounds guide, which could have a DevLog all on it's own. My team and I completed the 🌟Summer Hackathon🌟hosted by Codédex! It's the story of three determined first-timers trying to hack their way through a challenging task. We chose Track 1 - creating a 3D website for a board game cafe, Sip&Play. Although we had no idea whatsoever of a 3D website, we decided to tackle it head-on. Our mission was to meet the owner's requirements for an event calendar, a 3D food menu, and an approachable and engaging UI/UX. 🎲 We created a chessboard-inspired event calendar that keeps users informed about events at Sip&Play. 🎨 Incorporated board game elements such as cute little die, chess pieces, and even Boba, the best-selling item at Sip&Play. 🌿 Stuck to the green theme, as advertised on their logo, paying great attention to small details. Challenges? Absolutely! Headings vanished, objects turned pitch dark, and many other hurdles came our way. But we're incredibly proud of what we've achieved in our first-ever attempt! Case Study Showcase ✨ Have you ever felt unmotivated to achieve the goals you've set for yourself? 🤔 This has been a problem I have personally been struggling with for a while now. It always seemed like I would fall short in long-term tasks I've given myself in comparison to my completion of tasks with external motivation. This was something that was heavy on my mind when I was given the broad assignment of creating a BINGO-style app in my interactive design class during undergrad. So now I would like to go through the steps of how I designed this app to make every day better. White paper research: ✏65% of people achieve their goals when making them public. ✏95% of people achieve their goals when they have someone to keep them accountable. Using this knowledge I wanted to leverage this to design an app where users are able to complete the goals they set out for themselves. UPDATE - THIS DELEGATION IS NOW FULL, THANK YOU! Hi Everyone Many of you reading this will have already supported and shared previous posts on this outreach. Status update: we urgently need to fill four of our eight guide spots for Develop: Brighton. We currently have seven blind or low vision participants, and not enough guides, so are holding off on filling our eight participant spot, which we would dearly love to offer to a talented animation student. I'm wondering if we could get some feedback from folks. Thanks to the generosity of the organisers, we offer a full three day pass, worth £500, which gives the recipient access to recordings of the talks, as well as being at the event itself. In 2023 we spent two weeks meeting potential guides to find the best matches. In 2024, next to nada. We have three wonderful returning guides, and as of yesterday, 1 new fantastic guide, all of whom recognise the value to them of taking part. We are really aware of how challenged the industry is right now, with so many people losing their jobs, and worrying about rent or mortgages, food on the table, and our futures. So we definitely understand, that companies may be pulling up the drawbridge and saying no to accessibility and inclusion. We're feeling also that individual game devs are also saying no, and we are curious why this might be. We had hoped that by offering free passes, and the opportunity to gain unique insights into accessibility and design, we might be offering folks something good. We also know from our own experience, how helping others can help us with our own mental health. I'm sharing this in part to add another angle to the challenges our industry is going through, for feedback on our communications and our project, as although our posts are receiving many likes and shares, there is close to no take-up from game devs, and lastly, if you've made it this far, to ask if there's anyone network, perhaps someone in-between jobs, who might value a reason to be at Develop, with a free pass, making a huge difference to someone else's life, remembering the joy of games and how they connect us, and learning about game play and game development for blind gamers, and... having a fun fun time with some of the most passionate gamers on the planet. This week's 💡Really Nice Resource💡 is.... Ordinary Folk's Play Library! This is one of those resources that isn't massively advertised and is pretty underutilised imo. It's a page full of free project files, scripts, experiments and plugins from the Vancouver based (God I want to live there), ever-giving motion studio that is Ordinary Folk. The project files aren't to be used in your own work, the real value though, is learning how these large projects are put together. Don't get me wrong there's complex and skilled work that goes into them, but it's the same as learning all the parts in a computer. You learn that it's an arrangement of systems are devices working together in harmony and not just a magic box that shows you memes. Here's a toast to LM Studio, my absolute lifesaver! 🎉🔧 I've got 100+ projects under my belt, but the conceptualisation and execution of Local LLMs was, by far, the toughest. When I first dived into the world of Local LLMs, here’s what I had: 1. A pile of concepts 2. A head full of ideas 3. An endless list of potential roadblocks 4. An unwavering resolve to conquer them all And this hustle, indeed, was the best part! It was an uphill task with a steep learning curve, but the thrill of overcoming each challenge was an adrenaline rush like no other. The joy of seeing my concepts take shape was unparalleled. But one thing I had was my love and passion for LM Studio. Here’s what I did: 1. I used the tool to discover countless Local LLMs 2. I downloaded and ran them locally for testing and optimisation 3. I took advantage of LM Studio's features to streamline my workflow 4. I explored various innovative ways to improve the efficiency of my projects 5. It's great when students connect with established practitioners and find inspiration in their work. Bafta Award Winning Game Developer Mark Healey visited HSDC Alton today to discuss his career, view a showcase of our Games Design students work and answer questions. It's amazing to see how an experienced games artist and co-founder of Media Molecule - the team behind the multi million selling Little Big Planet games series - started out as a bedroom coder selling hand labelled Commodore 64 cassette games in the school playground to his mates. The students were impressed by Mark's creativity, DIY spirit and industrious energy. It's notable that he took the time to look at each students digital game design work, give advice and offer encouragement. Undoubtedly a memorable day for these young creatives. Key takeaways - Don't wait for inspiration - get stuck in - produce stuff - eureka moments will follow Being a visual production specialist is great but it also helps to know some coding and audio production techniques as you will be able to realise your ideas more fully.
