If you’ve found a mushroom growing in Canberra – do not eat it. Death cap mushrooms grow in the Canberra region. They might look like edible species, but they are highly toxic. They can grow anywhere in our region, at any time. All parts of a death cap mushroom are poisonous and cooking does not make them safe. If you think that someone may have eaten a mushroom, go straight to a hospital emergency department or call 000. There are also other harmful mushrooms that grow in our city. It’s important to never eat wild mushrooms. If you think you’ve seen a death cap mushroom in a public area, you can report it to Access Canberra by phone 13 22 81, or on the Fix My Street tool at https://lnkd.in/gR6UBpCC At home, you can dispose of wild mushrooms in your household rubbish (but not your compost). Tres bien. But where does it end with smallholders? How much are we expecting out of them? What is their capacity to champion such a system? Who should we engage to service them in maintaining their value chains? Why turning them into entrepreneurs in the name of resilience is almost the only go-to solution nowadays? How can we protect them (and the system) from imminent greenwashing intentions/activities? An entire new paradigm maybe unfolding in here...

If the world is to #transition towards #agrifoodsystems that are more #sustainable and #equitable, small-scale production systems will be #keytoprogress. Large parts of the world depend on small-scale systems for #maintaining #foodsecurity and #nutrition. The diverse roles and functions of small-scale production are presented as being essential to realizing #sustainable #agrifood #systems transformation and respecting its social, #environmental and #economic dimensions. #Contraints faced by small-scale farmers in #accessing the #assets, the financial and knowledge services and market positioning that can support profitable livelihoods should be examined. For this purpose, some #recommendations need to be #implemented such as: ■ Create an enabling environment to support the multifonctionality of small-scale production; ■ Address the economic and social marginalization of small-scale producers; ■ Ensure the political voice and participation of small-scale producers in agrifood systems governance; ■ Increase access of small-scale producers to natural and productive resources; ■ Improve access to financial services; ■ Improve the market positioning of small-scale producers; ■ Support the co-creation and exchange of knowledge and innovation for sustainable small-scale production. The #foodsystemsapproach allows a better understanding of the needs and practices of farmers and their families as #key #players in food systems, and therefore to better understand how #thesepractices could be #sustainable.
