Story of Al-baik - Famous fried chicken chain Two brothers Ihsan and Rami Ghazaleh from Palestine who own and run this food chain. Their father Shakour initially started the business in 1974 under the name Broast restaurant. He introduced healthier method to make crispy fried chicken. He passed away after 2 years of starting the business and his sons Ihsan and Rami took over. They both worked hard to find the right name for the business and finally got hands on Al-Baik. The pressure of keeping people fed in our community has gone to a new level. At Harvest House Atlantic we focus on meeting the needs of those most vulnerable within our communities. In the hierarchy of priorities, access to food remains front and centre, but with rising costs of living we are feeling the pressure that this creates. To put it in perspective, here are our meal counts over the past several months: - September 2023 - 13,059 meals served (435 average) - October 2023 - 15,371 meals served (495 average) - November 2023 - 17,265 meals served (575 average) - December 2023 - 21,505 meals served (693 average) This increase over a 4 month period mirrors what our Food Partners such as Food Banks Canada | Banques alimentaires Canada and Food Depot Alimentaire are communicating to various levels of Government. The increased demand on food banks and food serving agencies is rising at alarming rates. We are grateful for all of those who support us and help by donating funds or food to help alleviate the pressure on the system. It should also be mentioned that Government of New Brunswick / Gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick has stepped up this winter to assist as well. Without everyone's support we would not be able to feed a fraction of those coming to our doors. This post is not to lay blame on anyone specifically, but to highlight that the pressure on the system continues to rise to levels we have not seen before as an organization. Our team is incredibly proud of all those who work in our kitchen, drivers who pick up donations, those who keep our inventories straight and the countless volunteers and groups that serve each week. We made a decision as a Leadership team in our annual meetings last week that feeding those in our community remains one of our top priorities. Additionally, we are committed to seeking funding sources to expand our current space in order to feed more who are looking to us for this support. If food security is something that you are passionate about and have the ability to support the work that we are doing, please do not hesitate to reach out. Now that the holiday season is over and the new year is in full swing, many food banks across the country are still in need of donations. “We are going to continue to need the same level of support that we got at Christmas, I think for the next few months, if not for this entire year. What we want to do is ensure that we're able to keep our shelves stocked because we don't see a decrease in demand in our near future,” said Interfaith Food Bank executive director Danielle McIntyre. “It gets scary when you think about how long this has been going on. And knowing that there's going to be higher food prices again this year. That means on top of having more families to serve, we're going to need more money because we do have to buy the food items that don't come into us.”, she continued. Our #HungerCount2023 report found that food bank usage is up by 32% over March 2022 and nearly 80% over March 2019. This simply is not sustainable.
