People who run and employ staff for pools, public/school/private pools, don't understand the profession of lifeguards and coaches and treat us horribly. From pay to duties forced on us. It's not the lifeguard"s or coach's duty to trim the fence, clean the changing rooms, be gate guards, be waiters and waitresses, cook and all the many other jobs that we are given that take us away from our actual jobs at the pool. We are professionals who should be paid as such and getting paid peanuts is an insult to us and our profession of lifeguarding and coaching. This attitude towards us is passed on to swimming students, who believe that learning how to swim should be cheap. We are trained to know, how to save lives, how to keep pools and bodies of water safe, how to rescue people from different water disasters and accidents, how to perform CPR as we get the person to the hospital and so many other things. We also have years and some of us, decades of experience and understand being away from the pool doing other jobs that are not in our job description, and training someone how to swim and about water safety, survival and rescue is not something that should be taken lightly and like a joke. Instead about lifeguards and coaches being forced to take up other jobs while being threatened with dismissal and remember why I am not employed and will fight, sweat and do my best to make Bee's Swimming and Safety a brand that will help many coaches, especially female lifeguards coaches who get to be abused worse than the male ones get their dignity and worth. Treat others better because it will always come back to you. #TheNiqabiSwimmingCoach #LessonsFromSwimming

At Mill Park Leisure I like to do weekly Lifeguard Safety Tips. These are an opportunity for me to informally speak to the team about various aspects of lifeguarding. Bellow is the latest tip put out to the team: Good afternoon Lifeguards We are all familiar with our Watch Around Water Policy, but do you know about our Weak/Non-Swimmer Policy? Today's Lifeguard Safety Tip focuses on SwimSafe. SwimSafe was created following a coroner's recommendation after the tragic drowning of 12-year-old Harry Nguyen. Harry was not a strong swimmer, but because he was 12, he was not identified under the Watch Around Water Policy. SwimSafe aims to remove the barriers for weak swimmers to identify themselves and encourages weak and non-swimmers to swim safely. Educating our patrons about the orange wristband for weak or non-swimmers is crucial. But what should we do when a weak or non-swimmer approaches us? We share the 5 tips of SwimSafe: 1. Read the Safety Signs 2. Enter Feet First 3. Stay Within Your Safe Depth 4. Swim With A Friend 5. Put Your Hand Up for Help Knowing these 5 tips is vital for all lifeguards. Being able to confidently recite them to weak or non-swimmers can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. Let's encourage weak and non-swimmers to SwimSafe! Thank you to the amazing Dena Kutrolli for turning this week’s safety tip into a short video! Chris Hibbert Aylie Spence Bobby Savic Chris Worsnop Scott Vanderheyden Jamie Washburn

AS A SGE LIFEGUARD WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT PREVENTION STRATEGY. Prevention is at the heart of your job. If you see dangerous or risky behavior, you can intervene and reduce the chance of an accident, Despite your best reasonable efforts, however accidents can happen, and you cant watch everyone all the time. you can't prevent accidents if patrons choose to disregard your warnings or don't use common sense, such as when caregivers leave children unattended, nonswimmers choose to enter the water without a life jacket, or people dive into shallow water where No diving signs are posted. in these instances, patron actions can cause an emergency. Rather than thinking that prevention is solely the job of the lifeguard, you and the facility managers where you work should focus on your mutual responsibility for implementing prevention strategies. Having a strategy implies that several layers of protection are in place, all designed to help reduce the chance of injury, illness, or drowning. Patron should share in this responsibility as well. General Manager - Kunduchi Wet-n-Wild Water Park - Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | "Experienced Hospitality Professional | Recreation and Entertainment-Animation Leadership Specialist | Certified Six Sigma Black Belt "
Here's to a listing of #MajiMagic #AquaPark #waterbased #teambuilding #funactivities for your #group or #team or #colleagues at #work #office in #nairobi 2. Water-Based Trust Fall: In a water-based trust fall team building game, participants take turns falling backward into the water with their eyes closed, trusting their teammates to catch and support them. This not only builds trust and communication with cognizance of safety but also adds an element of excitement and water fun to the activity. Our facilitators will have participants pair up into teams. Each team will consist of one person falling (the "faller") from atop an inflatable and several other individuals catching (the "catchers") from below at the lake level. The "faller" stands with their back to the water, arms crossed over their chest, and falls backward, trusting the "catchers" to support them and guide them safely into the water. For optimal impact, we will encourage role rotation to allow as many participants to take turns being the "faller" and the "catchers". This ensures everyone experiences both roles in building trust. We shall emphasize the importance of communication, trust, and following safety instructions between the "faller" and the "catchers". The "faller" shall signal when they are ready to fall, and the "catchers" shall provide verbal cues to guide the fall. The Open Lake with its deep waters is a Safe Environment is perfect enough for a safe fall. Debriefing is an integral part of our Team Building facilitation. Hence, we shall have a brief discussion with participants, after the activity, to reflect on the experience. Facilitators shall encourage participants to share their feelings and thoughts about trust and teamwork. In our facilitation, we prioritize safety through having certified and experienced lifeguards on standby, issuance of life jackets that are mandatory to be worn by all, and tailor activities to suit the group's comfort level and swimming abilities. We also issue wetsuits for customers comfort. If anyone happens to be uncomfortable participating, we are able to scale down or scale up the activity to match ability and preference or even provide alternative activities. Look out for more activities... #TrustFall Maji Magic Aqua Park

I previously shared these thoughts on a professional group I belong to in Aquatics. I'm sharing it here because it resonated with so many in our Aquatics Safety Industry. Know when to leave. At least once a week I see an impassioned, pain filled post about the problems someone in our industry is experiencing at their employer. I won't recount all of those problems, we know what they are. I've been there. I spent four years at a place, at first just as a lifeguard, then as an Instructor and Area Supervisor. We had insane save volume due to our wave pool, plus a host of other challenges. I pointed out problems and got ignored. In the end, I probably should have left that place after my boss got fired in late 2017. But I didn't because I thought, "Maybe if I make the right argument, maybe if I use the right evidence, maybe if I lead by example, and maybe I can possibly reach those that aren't listening," things will change. Plus, there is the sense of obligation I felt to the guards and the guests. I did, however, finally leave. Or was forced out, there are different versions of the story. After I left, things got worse, and I used to beat myself up over that because I told myself, "Damn it, if only I had fought harder." But it wouldn't have made any difference. The people I was arguing with didn't see problems, they saw acceptable conditions, desirable design features, and lived with the blind faith that their certifications and training would save them. It didn't. You can't change those who will not listen. When the heart and mind are ablative to facts and evidence, you can not shift them. So you have a choice to make. If you stay, and by staying you are making a choice, you have to accept what you can't change and drop it. If you can not, or are unable to accept what you can't change, then the choice, painful as it may be, is very clear. You have to leave. These days, I'm pretty quick to leave a place if I am unheard. You might be worried that you'll get a "reputation." Yeah, maybe you will. I know I have one, I know exactly what I am on the box top. Anyway, if you are sitting in your office by the pool deck today wondering why you should keep doing what you are doing, and you are unheard, feel the place is unsafe, and that you are powerless to stop it, just know this. I know where you are at. It is okay to leave. It really is. Thanks for listening. #transitions #leavingtoxicitybehind #toxicworkplace #aquatics #attractions #waterparks #lifeguarding #lifeguardinginstructor #selfcare #healing
