What a difference a year makes! February 1, 2023 was the day that my weekly 1:1 was actually a meeting with HR to terminate me due to a company reorganization. This past year had challenges. It also provided personal growth and ultimately my dream position as a full-time business faculty member at Penn State! For anyone blind-sided by a layoff, here are a few of my lessons learned: - Lean into your support system. Don't try to go it alone. Family, friends, former coworkers care about you. Don't be shy to ask for help. - Follow your passion. I had difficulty getting hired in my most recent industry. I was going for what was "safe", not necessarily what was my passion. I think it showed. - In your "free time" add something new. After my personal fitness journey I wanted to be a Certified Personal Trainer. I had the time to do that. Many thanks to my supporters! Here's to 2024 and beyond!

For future owners and operators!
We’ve been through a week and a half of opening College Hunks of Louisville and it has been going well! I wanted to share some pre-opening and first week pains. 🥶 Why? I am here to share the realities of small business operations - the roses and the thorns! So future operators and owners can make the best choice for themselves. Some of the pains: 1. Received over 200 applications for our crew positions, were only able to hire 12, and train 6 (I thought the restaurant industry had labor challenges - this industry is on another level) 👀 2. Received our movers license a day before calendar launch - had to go back and forth with the gov due to confusing requirements 🏫 3. Realized that we are opening at a time when the moving industry has had a historically low amount of leads but high competition 📉 4. Became immobile during the first week of opening due to a disc bulge (not from moving a client haha) 🩻 5. Realized that we have a few loose screws in the crew training process and the client sales process ⚙️ And so much more… But we are overcoming them all with a pinch of stress, a solution-oriented mindset, and a ton of fun. A majority of the credit goes to Derrick Wiest. The next post will be all about the lessons learned while overcoming failure points. Just getting started 😤

Im a LMSW currently and considering supervision for my LCSW. Got a few questions: Do people normally pay for supervision or find a position that provides it? For folks that have completed it, how much does it enhance your career? How did you obtain supervision? What resources would you recommend that I seek for study during the process?

I currently enjoy the opportunity to work for my alma mater and there’s at least one thing that is the same around here as it was almost 30 years ago: there’s not enough parking. As a student, if I was late for class, I would sometimes pull into employee parking and take my chances. Sadly, I ended up with a few tickets. I tended to take out my frustrations on the student employees serving as parking enforcement officials. While I understood logically that they were simply doing their job, I also saw them as traitors who mercilessly doled out tickets to their fellow students. In fact, when my friends and I would see them on campus we would sometimes “boo” them, as if they were the opposing team at a sporting event. I’m not proud of it, but that’s what happened. These days, when I see them, I’m grateful for their willingness to do their noble work: ensuring that employee parking spots aren’t taken by students who shouldn’t be parking there. 😊 Although I sympathize with students today who may feel like I did then, my situation is now totally different, and my perspective has changed. It seems that currently algorithms, media, and other forces would have us believe that those who see the world differently than we do are an enemy that intends us harm. In my experience, however, most people are doing their best to do what seems right to them given their current situation. Take a minute today to reflect on how you view someone in your life who doesn’t see things the way you do. Is there an opportunity to assume best intent and show respect for their beliefs so that you might have a productive relationship going forward? Happy Friday! #assumebestintent #disagreebetter #persective #storytellingforbusiness

May 28th marks 5 years working at Georgia-Pacific. 5 years since I moved to a tiny Oklahoma town to begin my first Big Girl Job. 5 years since I walked into the GP Fletcher site with my freshly bought steel toed boots that my dad went with me to buy from Walmart. 5 years since I first met Casey Hobbs and knew immediately that I wanted her to be my mentor (and my friend. She was (and is) the coolest!!) 5 years of moving around the country. 5 years of meeting the most intelligent and talented workers. 5 years of realizing hey, they didn't include THIS in the textbook. 5 years of thinking about the wild book I could write about my experiences. 5 years of learning about people and how quirky they are. 5 years of being lifted up by my colleagues when I felt that I wasn't good enough, smart enough, or experienced enough. 5 years of wage proposals, PBM classes, technical training, SOP creation, qualifications, etc, etc, etc. 5 years of getting to know some pretty wonderful people, like Janet Carroll, who took a chance on me and believed in me when I didn't, and Scott Yerger, who continues to help me grow and learn and teaches me something new every day, while putting my name in for new experiences constantly. It's really hard to put into words your feelings. How do I actually put down how grateful I am to have gotten to start my career with this company and these people? It's a feeling, it doesn't belong in words. But I'm trying my best because I want my network to know that these 5 years have been phenomenal. I haven't just learned about the job, I've learned about myself. If you met me 5 years ago, I don't think it's a stretch to say I am a different person now, and I think a lot of people would agree. I love getting to grow with GP. If you have been a part of my 5 years, thank you so much. And I'm looking forward to the next 5.
