The Global E-waste Monitor 2024, published by the United Nations, shows staggering amounts of E-waste created worldwide. In 2022, 62 billion kg of E-waste were generated globally (compared to 34 billion kg in 2010), with only 22.3% documented as formally collected and recycled in an environmentally-sound manner. While E-waste generated has grown by an average rate of 2.3 billion kg per year between 2010 and 2022, global recycling capacity has only grown 0.5 billion kg annually on average, meaning that E-waste generation is outpacing recycling capacity by nearly a factor of five. So, today I'm delivering you some more cold hard facts to illustrate my point. The journey of recycling e-waste is not without its challenges. One significant hurdle is the lack of a standardised approach to e-waste recycling globally. Varying regulations and inadequate infrastructure in many regions hinder effective recycling processes. Furthermore, not all e-waste is recyclable with current technologies, leading to a substantial portion ending up in landfills or being incinerated, perpetuating environmental harm. The journey of recycling e-waste is not without its challenges. One such challenge is there's no one-size-fits-all approach worldwide. Different rules and not enough infrastructure in some places make effective recycling processes difficult. As well as this, not all e-waste can be recycled yet.
