Here is the pre-title teaser to Part One (of 2) of my films about duelling, currently showing on the History Hit channel. See link below and note that they have a 14-day free trial. It is very easy to log in and view from anywhere in the world. Part One deals with duelling with swords and Part Two with pistols. Part One has been very kindly received. Part Two will be out soon. Here are some of the comments people have left about Part One: “Fantastic production - entertaining and educating in equal measure. No duel inducing insults required here!” “Fascinating and entertaining telling of a complex historic episode. As usual told with real first-hand knowledge.” “An incredible program. Love the presenting, the action and the authenticity. More of these, please. Epic history telling!” “ I love Mike Loades commentary” “Absolute gold!” I am so grateful to the people who take the time and trouble to leave a comment after watching the film. It is wonderful to hear from viewers and to get this feedback. Even if you think you know all about duelling culture, I think there may some things in this that surprise you. Give it a look and let us know. Oh - and by the way, the subtitles are auto-generated. I clearly need to work on my diction, since they have rendered duel as jewel! The word duel, also incidentally, does not necessarily imply dual. It derived from the Latin bellum (battle/war) and 'b' was often written in old script as 'du' , which gives us duellum, subsequently rendered in English as duel - it just means a combat. https://lnkd.in/deYmNaaD #historyhit #mikeloades #renaissance #swords #duels #historydoc

Last week I attended a brilliant BBC Docs Download panel discussion of the documentary 'Hell Jumper', with director Paddy Wivell, producer Adriana Timco, exec Collin Barr, and editor Rupert Houseman, hosted by Carl Callam. Hell Jumper is a mesmerisingly powerful film, showcasing the very best and worst of humanity through the polarising forces of love and war. It is the best documentary I have seen this year and I endeavour anyone who has not already, to go give it a watch. Thank you to everyone on the panel for the valuable insights on how to make a strong documentary. For those that could not make the talk, or anyone interested, here are some of the key points of wisdom I took away from the discussion: 1) Be bold and follow a direction. It’s sometimes necessary to hedge your bets but as much as possible strive to make something unique by going for one thing, rather than trying to do everything. 2) Stories come alive through authenticity. If you find the thing that makes something true, relatable and real, people will recognise that and appreciate it. 3) Surround yourself with excellent people who push you to rigorously think through decisions and make sure each one works. 4) Sometimes the best things / scenes / moments come from working hard through the areas that are presented as immovable obstacles. 5) The best testimony comes not necessary from making sure you get all the details you wanted, but from creating an environment in which the people talking feel themselves and comfortable. Through this, people are much more likely to speak openly, honestly, and often surprisingly. 6) Find the light in the story. There is so much negativity in the world, films must try to capture the human (or non human) beauty in the world and provide a beacon of light that offers fresh perspectives on situations.

A Big Review... Michael Lewis's 2010 book "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" is a riveting and incisive exploration of the 2007-08 financial crisis, triggered by the collapse of the United States housing bubble. Lewis, a masterful storyteller with a keen eye for detail, delves into the complexities of the financial markets and the individuals who foresaw the impending disaster. The book serves as both a detailed chronicle of the events leading up to the crisis and a critique of the systemic failures that allowed it to happen. Head over to Movies to History, where you cand read a review of the 2010 book, that includes context and background on the 2007-08 financial crisis, as well as the key figures and institutions leading up to and involved in the crisis that led to the Great Recession of 2008-09, with an analysis of key themes discussed by Lewis in the book, as well as a description of "The Big Short", the 2015 film adaption of Lewis's book directed by Adam McKay from Paramount Pictures. After you have read the review for the "Featured Film Blog" of the month for June, you can stream the film adaption on Hulu or Paramount+, and short the couch market with The Academy award winning film for Best Adapted Screenplay tonight! #moviestohistory #featuredfilmblog #thebigshort #review #ChristianBale #stevecarell #ryangosling #bradpitt #AdamMcKay #thebigshortinsidethedoomsdaymachine #MichaelLewis #financialcrisis #housingmarketcrash #academyawards #BestAdaptedScreenplay #ParamountPictures https://lnkd.in/e-xFHPEr

For a film that's devoid of any sound, #AQuietPlaceDayOne communicates what most films fail to do in two hours. The film does justice to the much-familiar story and the thrilling highs but fails to give a comprehensive view of the events that transpired and that are yet to come. Here's my detailed review:
