Periodontal disease, a common oral affliction, is known not only for impacting oral health but also for its strong links to systemic diseases. In a collaborative effort, Director Physician Song Zhongchen from the Ninth People's Hospital and Professor Wang Gang from Ruijin Hospital, affiliated with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, recently published significant research. Their study, "Subgingival microbiome and gingival crevicular fluid metabolome characteristics in patients with Alzheimer's disease and amnestic mild cognitive impairment," appeared in the journal "Alzheimer's Research & Therapy" (impact factor 9.0). Jun Yoshioka, MD, PhD, a molecular biologist at CUNY School of Medicine, was awarded over $3.1 million from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to delve into the role that an ancient family of proteins may have in heart disease. His focus? Investigating the scaffold protein Arrdc4 and its impact on coronary artery disease and diabetic cardiomyopathy. New Biomarker Test for Alzheimer’s Disease Recent research at Stanford Medicine has shed light on why women are more prone to autoimmune diseases. Scientists discovered that a process known as X-chromosome inactivation, which prevents overproduction of proteins in female cells, inadvertently triggers immune responses that can lead to autoimmune conditions. By studying male mice engineered to express the Xist molecule, involved in this inactivation, the researchers found that these mice showed increased autoimmune responses, mirroring those seen in females. 🗓SEMINAR: Join us on Friday, April 5th for the SCEHSC Seminar Series with Cathrine Hoyo, PhD. In her talk, Hoyo will discuss challenges we face investigating early exposure to chemical and non-chemical stressors, and their effects on metabolic dysfunction and other common chronic diseases, and how DNA methylation of sequence regions regulating the monoallelic expression of imprinted genes, some of which may be associated with obesity, can address some of the challenges we face. She will also discuss the new Illumina Human Imprintome Methylation Array together with new imprinted genes, and how this could accelerate discovery of chemical and non-chemical stress-responsive epigenetic response, genome-wide, and with that, guide public health intervention efforts for common chronic diseases. Hoyo is an epidemiologist and Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and co-leader of the Integrative Health Science Facility Core in the Center for Human Health and the Environment. Her research has the overarching goal of improving our understanding of how early development influences risk of common chronic diseases, especially those that exhibit racial/ethnic differences in incidence and/or mortality, including cardiometabolic diseases and some cancers.
