Very informative video on the Southern California fires and the Canadair C-415 "Super Scooper" 🛩️ . This tanker plane literally can collect water from an ocean or lake and carry it towards a fire. The pilots who handle such emergencies are as impressive as they are urgently needed. We also need to respect the critical roles in emergency planning and prioritize the need for sufficient funding in emergency preparedness. Let's not forget about our rotary pilot friends as well (helicopters). Over the last few days a drone got in the way of one of these Super Scooper tankers and interfered with the whole response team. A report has been published into a fatal accident involving two gliders which collided during a competition flight near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, 17 August 2023. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/ea9nXw28 As part of the investigation, we analysed all midair collisions that occurred in UK airspace in the period between 2003 and 2023. In this period, 39 collisions were identified, of which 15 involved one or more fatalities to the aircraft occupants. No collisions involved a commercial air transport aircraft, and no person on the ground was injured because of a collision. There were 15 collisions between gliders in the period, three of which involved a fatality. Eight collisions occurred between gliders participating in a competition. Of the 30 gliders involved, 18 landed safely and 12 crashed. Ten pilots were able to parachute to safety following a collision. Analysis of flight recorder files showed that, in 2022, gliding competitions accounted for 8.5% of all glider hours flown in the UK. #GeneralAviation #AviationSafety #Gliding

In the tragic incident involving Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 on December 29, 2024, at Muan International Airport, the aircraft—a Boeing 737-800—attempted a landing without its front landing gear deployed. This led to a crash that resulted in 181 fatalities. Fuel Dumping is not a feature of this aircraft unfortunately and even if it could there was other system failures that meant it needed to land. In emergencies where fuel reduction is necessary, aircraft without fuel-dumping capabilities may opt to burn off fuel by holding in a designated airspace. However, this requires sufficient time and favorable conditions, which may not be available during critical situations. Specific Incident Context: In the case of Flight 7C2216, the sequence of events unfolded rapidly: 1. Bird Strike Warning: The crew received a bird strike warning shortly before landing. 2. Mayday Call and Aborted Landing: A mayday call was issued, and an initial landing attempt was aborted. 3. Second Landing Attempt: During the second attempt, the aircraft landed without its front landing gear, leading to the crash. 4. Due to the fact the plane ran out of space to come to a standstill and instead hit a barrier, this caused a catastrophic explosion due to fuel in the wings igniting. In this unfortunate event, the combination of the aircraft’s inability to dump fuel and the rapid progression of the emergency left the crew with limited options to mitigate the situation.
