Reflecting on Europe's #Deeptech Potential: Monday Insights Recently, I’ve come across numerous investment news related to #deeptech #ScaleUps and tech #foundries. It’s clear that Europe stands at a pivotal moment to harness and amplify its deeptech capabilities. With experience across various deeptech domains, I see immense potential for Europe to strategically scale its efforts and seize the future of technology. The challenge lies in the amounts that Europe is capable of mobilizing. While the US has made bold, concentrated investments under initiatives like the CHIPS and Science Act, allocating nearly $19 billion to companies like #Micron, #Samsung, and #TSMC, Europe has been taking a more diversified approach. The European Innovation Council’s (#EIC) €1.2 billion program for 2024, coupled with funds like IQ Capital's €374 million, is a good start, but it's only about 1/10 of what the US is investing. In discussions with stakeholders, it's evident that both national and European entities recognize that as deeptech champions reach scale-up size, increased investments are necessary. Leveraging public procurement can be a powerful way to support these scale-ups, providing them with the necessary market validation and financial backing to thrive. By fostering stronger collaborations between governments, private investors, and corporations, Europe can pool resources and expertise, driving greater innovation and growth across the deeptech landscape. Streamlining funding processes and providing more flexibility can attract and retain high-potential startups, ensuring that Europe remains a hub for groundbreaking technological advancements. Having worked across many deeptech domains, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative potential of Europe’s diversified approach. By combining this with targeted, substantial investments in high-potential projects and leveraging public procurement, we can unlock unprecedented opportunities for technological leadership and economic growth. According to a recent report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Europe’s DeepTech Sector has the potential to grow to be an €8 Trillion market by 2030. This equates to almost half the projected GDP of the 27 EU countries. However, Europe is currently trailing far behind the USA in its investment & commercialisation within the DeepTech space. Between 2018 & 2023, there was €58 Billion investment into DeepTech companies across Europe, compared to €215 Billion worth of funding into US companies. techUK and TechWM sign strategic agreement to accelerate region's digital economy 🤝🌆 techUK, the technology trade association, has signed an agreement to work more closely with TechWM. By formalising their partnership, signed during the West Midlands Tech Review in Wolverhampton during UK Tech Week, techUK and TechWM will together raise the profile of the West Midlands' tech sector while trying to raise funding, improve skills and encourage companies to adopt digital technologies to improve productivity. The agreement should increase ongoing collaboration between tech companies regionally and nationally, and help boost membership of techUK as a cohesive voice for UK technology companies.
