Just some thoughts for a Friday... I had a nice catch up with Christian Müller yesterday afternoon, he gave me a lot of insight into the projects his new enterprise NGFT Solutions is working on (you can learn more about that later). Being two flight safety guys the conversation turned to accident rates, training and the role of the regulators. We wondered why for example, ab initio pilots are still being taught how to navigate in the same way their parents and grandparents and, in all probability, their great grandparents...bit of a waste when besides what is in the aircraft most carry a secondary and tertiary means of navigation on their person. We also wondered why there isn't as part of the syllabus, risk analysis and decision making training...since the overwhelming majority of accidents begin with poor risk analysis and decision making...it's a bit of a hole don't you think? On accident rates we agreed that improvement had stagnated that perhaps the reactive approach had had it's time and that a move to proactive is over due, though we did realise that a lack of data may make that problematic as well hard to justify to the counters of beans...I mean how do you assign a value to something that doesn't happen? I won't go into the detail of our regulator discussion (you don't have all day!) save to say it might be a good time for EASA, FAA and the rest to go back to first principles and ask themselves, what is our purpose? Do your EFB or Onboard Performance Tool (OPT) calculations make sense?

Here's a thought - instead of pouring in precious $$$ in this direction, how about directing more of this resource to training and improving the competencies, skill levels and knowledge of your pilots (plural)? Increase the minimum requirement simulator training to keep your pilots sharp and up to speed (no pun intended). I'd bet that the $ spent will provide more immediate and even long term impact to safety performance.

He developed the OODA Loop as a way to train other pilots to react quickly and effectively in aerial dogfights.   The OODA Loop (an acronym that stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) is a four-step decision-making process that is designed to help you react quickly and effectively in any situation.    The idea behind the OODA Loop is that the individual or organization who can go through this process faster, will have an advantage over others. The OODA Loop is not a static process, it’s a dynamic, constantly evolving cycle. The key to using the OODA Loop effectively is to go through the process quickly and to be able to adapt as the situation changes.   How does the OODA Loop work?   Observation: Gather and analyze external intelligence on environmental trends, industry, consumers, and competitors. A great place to source incident response processes is the aerospace industry. Their tolerance for failure is extremely low (in contrast to running SaaS products) and they take their investigations, writeups, and process improvements very seriously. One of the most famous events is the Gimli Glider incident where a passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and the pilots had to glide it to safety with limited controls: https://lnkd.in/eBc3WKN7 Give it a read and ask yourself the following: * what went well? * what didn't go well? * what was circumstantial or lucky?
