Over the years I have seen many different ways that some zoos have done their KPI's Some have been successful for both the staff and the park, while others have been a total waste of time having a negative effect on staff and in time the park. A well set out KPI can assist the zoo when evaluating employees while at the same time helping the team members reach their professional goals. Many parks utilize a KPI system as a method of grading their team members. The problem with this is that it only works if you take the time to interview each individual and if the management really understand how to use this tool effectively, and not something that needs to be rushed though. So the question is, what type of questions do you ask your team members when doing a KPI? A good start is to ask, What is one thing you did this year that you are proud of? And then ask, What were your biggest challengers this year? Once you have the answers to those two questions you then can ask the three most important questions. 1. What can we in Management do to make the next year more successful for you? 2. Are there any park projects that you want to be involved in? 3. Are there any park projects that you would rather not be involved in? By asking these questions your team will feel that they have a voice in their own advancement in their chosen career and will give you a better overall view of where your park is in reaching its goals. And one other point about setting a KPI for your team members, is to check in with each individual during the year to see how they are doing. This can be done by setting a date while you are both talking to each other, that in six months you both will meet again to see how they are going in reaching their goals. Joy is dependable, accountable and manages multiple tasks and deadlines with ease. Her positive attitude and ability to build trusting and engaging relationships across the organization is so appreciated and has a big impact on our collaborative team culture. Joy exemplifies the Hungerford values on a daily basis, and we thank her for all her contributions over the last 5 years. Q: What is your favourite part of your job? A: I love the people I work with and the enormous amount of autonomy I’m granted. I know my boss has my back 100% which allows me to do my job with confidence. I work with a group of talented, caring and supportive individuals, who come from all walks of life and have varying degrees of experience - I have learned so much from all of them. Q: What is your favourite thing to do on the weekends? A: SLEEP!!! I’m kind of joking. If the weather is bad, I love to curl up on the couch and binge watch my favorite TV shows/movie series and/or read a good book. If the weather is nice and the sun is out, I need to be outside. I’m either hiking, camping, playing beach volleyball/softball or just straight up suntanning. Q: What career advice would you give to your younger self? A: Try to work and surround yourself with people whose values align with your own. Gain as much experience and absorb as much information as you can from every job. Street knowledge is just as important as book knowledge and can’t be taught in a classroom – it only comes with experience. Also, success isn’t just measured by a salary and a title; it’s measured by who you are as a person and how you treat others. Never forget who you are, where you came from and the strength it took to get where you’re at. Q: What is a recent book or movie you would recommend? A: Everything Everywhere All at Once – it’s not recently released but it’s a movie that I would highly recommend. It’s weird, funny, action packed, emotionally charged; it’s a beautifully written/acted story about love and family. #MeettheTeam #HungerfordProperties
