Super excited to be partnering with WEMountain - Safe & Smart Riding to offer Mabey Ski guests and friends discounted access to their avalanche training tools.
Far too many of us in the industry - or even those who just enjoy free ride/backcountry skiing - have lost loved ones to avalanches, crevasse falls or other mountain disasters. According to Dominique Perret’s research, 90% of these accidents are down to poor decision making.
Many skiers/snowboarders feel that they have enough knowledge to go into the backcountry because they’ve read the avalanche bulletin, they know how to use a beacon, and they’ve practiced a companion rescue before. However, not nearly enough of us have taken the time to learn more on the prevention of such disasters.
I noticed in BC, Canada there is a much higher focus on getting certified with AST-1 and AST-2 before heading into the backcountry than I have seen anywhere else in Europe, Japan or further afield. I wonder whether the barrier is cost, or just lack of options available?
WEMountain - Safe & Smart Riding are looking to change this mentality worldwide and have created a backcountry course addressing the physiological, medical and energy factors that could signal potential risk factors, as well as sharing in depth information to improve knowledge on meteorology, topography and snow science.
The 12-lesson course costs CHF 99 per person - or CHF 79 for Mabey Ski guests and friends. Feel free to reach out if of interest or if you have any questions.
