On Monday, Silicon Valley Bank had the privilege of joining our partners at GBx -- a brilliant group of British entrepreneurs, investors, and tech executives -- for an informative discussion on the state of fundraising here in Silicon Valley. Here are a few key takeaways I thought worthwhile to share with all of you. 📏 Elevated Measuring Stick: The bar for raising capital in today’s environment is significantly higher compared to two or three years ago. Investors are demanding real traction metrics to prove product-market fit (users), alternative business models (revenue), and novelty of the tech itself (patents). 🤖 Internal Tech Investment: In boardrooms everywhere, AI and tech budget allocations are becoming critical discussions, with a focus on serious cost mitigation and simplifying the software stack. As such, SaaS companies are being forced to rethink how they deliver value, experimenting with savings-based revenue models to secure a quicker “Yes” from enterprise buyers. 💰 High Hopes for IPOs: Now already though the first quarter of the year and with only a couple notable exits, the IPO remains elusive. Paired with stalled M&A markets due to strong antitrust policies, funding has been hard to come by. Despite the challenging environment, many companies who raised rounds in the 2020/1 are still fairing well, buoyed by a high-interest rate environment yielding returns that can often cover essential expenses like payroll. -- Big thank you to the British Consulate-General in San Francisco for hosting us at your residence.
