I adore the arts, but am skeptical of any grand claims. In specific contexts, and at the right time, engaging with certain artworks that happen to resonate with an individual can not only be enjoyable but can be a potent tool for mental wellness, reducing stress hormones and boosting emotional resilience. But while the benefits can be real, the approach isn’t one-size-fits-all. Individual preferences in art significantly influence its impact—what soothes one person might not resonate with another. And acessibility and inclusivity are not easy to guarantee; arts are culture specific, and we differ greatly in our interest and readiness to be receptive at any particular time. Not everyone is guaranteed to benefit from each encounter. Artistic experiences can complement traditional therapies beautifully but aren’t replacement for those with severe conditions. All of which is to say, a nuanced understanding and realistic expectation are key to truly harnessing art’s potential in mental health care. #MentalHealthAwareness #ArtTherapy #InnovativeHealthcare #CulturalWellness
Well-being is not just “the absence of something that I don't want to experience; life has to have something in it that I do want to experience.” Thank you Tasha Golden, PhD for such a thoughtful discussion on the mental health benefits of music and art. https://lnkd.in/e5hF5AAM

The importance of self-kindness and self-care cannot be overstated in our fast-paced and demanding world. Taking care of oneself is not a luxury but a crucial aspect of overall well-being, both mentally and physically. Practicing self-kindness involves treating oneself with compassion, understanding, and patience. It means acknowledging and accepting one's imperfections and mistakes without self-judgment. This gentle approach to self allows for personal growth and resilience in the face of challenges. Equally vital is the concept of self-care, which involves intentional actions to maintain and improve one's health and well-being. This can encompass various aspects, including physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Engaging in activities that bring joy, relaxation, and fulfillment contributes to a balanced and healthier lifestyle. Prioritizing self-kindness and self-care is not selfish; it is an investment in one's own ability to navigate life's complexities. It enables individuals to recharge, reduce stress, and foster a positive relationship with oneself. This, in turn, has a ripple effect on relationships with others and the ability to face challenges with resilience. In a world that often emphasizes productivity and external validation, taking the time to be kind to oneself and practice self-care is a powerful act of self-love. It establishes a foundation for a healthier and more fulfilling life, allowing individuals to show up for themselves and others in a more present and compassionate manner. Lecturer in Medical Education - Reflective Practice Lead at Grifffith University School of Medicine & Dentistry
In this critical-creative work Mimi Khúc uses the humanities to explore unwellness (as distinct from illness), the pressure to be well and ableist expectations. “In mental health or health, when we say “universal”, we don’t actually mean it – there’s always an imagined, typical person. For example, the “universal” person is usually able-bodied, which shows the ableist expectation and assumptions we have for people and their abilities. In terms of mental health, we typically assume and expect “normal” levels of wellness. Once we have specificity we can challenge that compulsory wellness. The next step is, how do we create care that matches up to how we are unwell? Because the goal is care, not wellness. That starts when we first give ourselves permission to admit that we are not well, and permission to be unwell.” #narrativemedicine #medicalhumanities

Don’t wait for joy to come to you; go get more of it! Jolts of Joy are small, intentional actions that inject positive emotions into our day and help us take control of our wellbeing moment to moment. Here are some ideas to make Jolts of Joy a regular habit: ➡️ Schedule Jolts of Joy into your daily calendar. It might help to set a timer on your phone that prompts you at the same time. ➡️ At the end of each day, journal about the times you felt a positive emotion. What happened? Who was present? How did your body and mind feel? Think of Jolts of Joy as little bursts of positivity across the day - an opportunity to more mindfully cultivate positivity in your life. https://lnkd.in/ezAGG3NX #WellbeingWins #ProofPositive #SkillsOfHappiness #ScienceOfHappiness #Autism #PositivePsychology #AutismWellbeingAlliance #AutismIntervention

Baby and child sleep consultant and educator. Helping sleep-deprived parents achieve age-appropriate sleep for their little ones 💤 Offering accredited child sleep consultant training courses🎓
Not everyone knows, that as well as being a Sleep Consultant, I also work with families as a Child Psychologist, helping them with their child/children’s challenging behaviour. The families I work with say that just having someone there at the end of the phone to give advice when the challenging behaviour is happening makes them feel more confident as parents. With older children who have problems with their sleep, it is nearly always about the psychology of their behaviour rather than just being able to sleep train; we work with different techniques that often involve helping the child with separation anxiety, anger issues etc. If you are struggling with your child’s challenging behaviour, DM me, head to my website or book a free initial, no-pressure call with me (link in the Bio), I can help. #sleeptraining #sleeptrainingsuccess #independentsleep #sleepingthroughthenight #sleepconsultant #sleepconsultanttraining #happychildren #challengingbehaviour #childpsychologist
