Quality sleep is harder to come by for Black people, with economic, social and environmental factors all playing a role. In a survey published by the CDC in 2020, 43.5% of African-Americans had trouble sleeping compared to 30.7% of white respondents. Blacks individuals are consistently less likely to get seven hours of sleep per day compared to the white counterparts. Over the past 15 years these disparities have worsened Systemic inequities impact our sleep patterns and overall health in marginized communities. As we honor black history month, it is critical to acknowledge that while sleep is a universal need, it intersects culture, history and wellbeing. Quality sleep is not just a wellness goal, it’s a collective responsibilities. I am partnering with organizations to continue to shed light and create awareness on optimizing sleep and breaking down barriers to health and wellbeing.
