Digital Health Leader | AI & Clinical Integration Expert | Champion of Healthcare Digitization & Value-Based Care | Technology & Service Delivery Optimization | Value-Based Care |
The tides are changing, and legacy orthopedic and MSK providers are starting to venture into the digital and AI space. While this move is a bit behind the curve, it's encouraging to see these organizations begin to appreciate the advantages of the digital ecosystem. It's fascinating to see companies like Stryker embracing digitization and AI processes.
I hope this trend continues and that more legacy providers recognize the value of partnering with digital health startups and innovators. The future of healthcare is undoubtedly digital, and collaboration will be critical to unlocking its full potential.

ICYMI: Here's the latest Data & Insights from This Week in Surgery Centers.
Last September, HST released a State of the Industry Report with 45 chapters of best practices, 125+ KPIs for ASCs to track, and free benchmarking data for 15 key metrics.
As we approach the September 2024 report release, here are four 2023 data points, their impact, and tips for improvement.
1️⃣ Unused OR Blocks
▶ KPI: On average, 42% of blocked OR time goes unused.
▶ Impact: Unused OR time represents a direct financial loss. If you multiply the unused minutes by your revenue per OR per minute, you’ll know exactly how much you’re losing.
▶ Tips: Create release policies, offer incentives, and publicly share which physicians perform best in the breakroom or board meetings.
2️⃣ Revenue Per Case Per Specialty
▶ KPI: Ortho averages $5,449 per case, Cardio averages $4,355 per case, and Plastic averages $3,732 per case.
▶ Impact: Use these data points to negotiate with payers, project future revenue, and drive your growth strategy.
▶ Tips: Prioritize the recruitment and retention of physicians in high-revenue specialties, adjust your case mix, and invest in targeted marketing.
3️⃣ Patient Deposit Collection Rates
▶ KPI: A typical ASC only collects 53% of expected patient deposits at the time of service.
▶ Impact: By improving, you will reduce outstanding balances, minimize bad debt, reduce time spent following up with patients, and minimize the number of patients you send to collections.
▶ Tips: Implement pre-service financial counseling and use automated systems to generate accurate patient financial estimates, including a simple ‘pay now’ button.
4️⃣ Days to Bill
▶ KPI: On average, ASCs take 3.6 days to bill after completing the patient’s procedure.
▶ Impact: Lower your days to bill to optimize cash flow, reduce the risk of delayed payments, and get paid faster.
▶ Tips: Use EHR and practice management systems that are integrated with a clearinghouse, provide regular training for billing staff, and conduct regular audits to identify bottlenecks.
