Last week, we welcomed Mark Melton, MSc to our team! As the founder of ClearPath Biomarker Ops, Mark brings a wealth of expertise to Slope and will be essential in helping our team develop the first-ever end-to-end solution for #clinicaltrialexecution. We were able to sit down with him this week and discuss his previous experience in the #clinicaltrials industry, what he thinks the biggest challenges in #clinicalresearch are, and where he sees this next chapter leading for Slope. #clinicalinnovation

✅ Aliquoting fake blood into cryovials ✅ Running mock sample management exercises using lab manuals ✅ Experiencing a day-in-the-life at a busy research site These are just a few of the experiences our CEO, Rust Felix, and other members of the Slope team had during their recent visit at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. A huge thank you to the UPMC team for providing us with a new perspective on the frontline of #ClinicalResearch.
CEO + Co-founder of Slope | Biospecimen Lifecycle Software (B2B SaaS), Data, and Services for Clinical Trials
As someone deeply invested in transforming the inefficiencies of clinical research, I can't stress enough how valuable it is to spend a full day at a site — not just to shake hands, but to truly immerse yourself in the work. Roll up your sleeves, follow their SOPs, and I guarantee it will fundamentally change your perspective. Last week Jim Munz, Alexander Yant, Ross Cooper, and I visited UPMC Hillman Cancer Center — one of only three NCI-designated cancer centers in Pennsylvania — where they are supporting hundreds of active studies each year across 12 disease centers. We experienced firsthand the rigor and precision that underpins each phase of the biospecimen lifecycle through a mock sample management exercise. Over several hours we worked alongside the UPMC CRS lab team to process, store, and pack patient samples, navigating the same poorly constructed lab manuals the lab team must contend with each day. Even as someone who has talked to countless sites over the years, the in-person, hands-on experience was eye-opening. It reaffirmed just how vital these steps are to the success of clinical trials and, ultimately, how complex these workflows can become. At Slope, we are committed to transforming biospecimens into breakthroughs, and visits like this help us stay closely connected to the frontline of clinical research. A tremendously big thank you to Jamie Voyten and her team for hosting us, teaching me how to aliquot fake blood into cryovials, and for providing invaluable insights into how we can continue to support the important work of research sites like UPMC Hillman. Your dedication is inspiring!

Are you attending #ResearchRevolution next week? Be sure to catch our very own Ethan Seville as he participates in an insightful panel discussion focused on #clinicaltrial sustainability on Monday at 1:10pm. This session is sure to be one you don't want to miss as the panelists offer their perspectives on how the industry can evolve toward more sustainable practices. #RR24 #clinicaltrialsustainability #clinicalresearch
Back in my research coordinator days, I regularly had to destroy massive amounts of unused kits, IP, and other clinical supply. I'm not alone in this either- chronic oversupply seriously impacts practically every other coordinator I've met. At #RR24, Kunal Sampat, Aaron Meadows, Natasha Wilson and I will take a deep dive into the serious impact a lack of sustainable practices has on clinical trials. We'll also share real world strategies to avoid throwing study budgets in the dumpster. Come join us!
