For Christmas this year I got a wooden puzzle. The objective was to take all of these little, delicate, small, tiny, and not so tiny, wooden pieces and put them together in just the right way to make a marble run with a crank. I mentioned that the pieces were delicate right? If one piece is out of alignment, the whole things stops, or marbles go everywhere, or the whole things stops AND marbles go everywhere. For the system to work, it's all about achieving alignment - making sure the gears fit together just right, the runs are connected and smooth, and the spacing is correct. Not too big. Not too small. Just right. Sometimes, if things are out of alignment, the temptation, my temptation, can be to force it. Unfortunately, that brings unwanted, and unnecessary, stress. The result - broken pieces and a failed system. On the other hand, if I resist the temptation and step back for a minute - get curious and assess what's going on to determine where the misalignment is... I can make a small adjustment, not break anything, and get back to work - doing more of what I want, less of what I don't, and loving my results. Yesterday I had the opportunity to share one of my keynotes with the St. Louis Society of Association Executives (SLSAE) about the power of Value Driven Teams. A big part of the presentation was about aligning to clearly stated organizational values. When they are clear (4-5 values with specific actions and attitudes), an organization can align itself. Parts and people who fit, will naturally gravitate to the organization, while parts and people that don't fit will find a better fit somewhere else. The result - a culture of champions, who align with each other and can deliver peak performance regularly by communicating clearly, collaborating effectively, and persisting through challenges. Organizational values play a HUGE part in culture whether you know them or not. Known values bring clarity, confidence, and alignment. Unknown or ambiguous values bring the opposite.
