A huge thank you to Buffalo Wild Wings and Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers for sponsoring the Moretti's/NWSRA Golf Classic on August 22, 2024! We are so glad to have your support. Our fundraising events for accessible transportation for children and adults with disabilities who participate in NWSRA would not be as successful without dedicated sponsors by our side! I promise I'll post about my actual job (we have a new video to share about Mainframe mod and GenAI!) but as summer winds to a close I wanted to share a charity opportunity related to Golf: https://lnkd.in/g2i6mqfG Ultimately this is about helping kids lead healthier lives and is related to the amazing work that Jack and Barbara Nicklaus have done across the world to help kids heal and thrive with their Play Yellow initiative. My Wife Ashley and her colleague Kelli are going to play 72 holes of golf in one day and they are going to make it rain birdies. If you have a bit of a gambling mindset, you can make a donation based on the number of birdies they're going to make. You can also make an up-front donation. Note that this is focused on Colorado - ask your local pro if something is happening near you! Why is this on LinkedIn? Two reasons - first - this is really the only social media I do. I do so little I don't know if this actually counts as social media. Second - having married a professional golfer I've learned a lot about golf that has surprised me. Watching Ashley and her friends and colleagues navigate a male-dominated world (5% of PGA professionals are women. 5%!) is in many ways a clearer lens to the same challenges we see in technology. The backlash we've seen in some pockets of the world against fostering inclusion - one person's opinion here - ignores the reality that a diversity of thought and opinion makes teams better. Here's a golf example - when you're taking a golf lesson, you are incredibly vulnerable and it can be intimidating - no single approach works for everyone. Finding a coach that resonates with you (and this can be especially hard for women coming to the game, or children wanting to learn) is critical to your experience. There is not a long line to draw between this phenomenon and what we see in technology as leaders, mentors and peers. Also, golf is fundamentally a game of integrity - I've seen remarkable examples of leadership and integrity on the course (look up "Sahith Theegala penalty" for an unbelievable example recently) and again it reminds me of all the things we try to do as leaders and professionals in business. I've always liked the phrase "integrity is what happens when no one is looking" and if golf can help me and others to model that, there's more to the game than I thought. Let me close by saying - for those in the Northern Hemisphere - enjoy the last gasps of summer, whatever brings you outside to do so!
On Tuesday, September 24th, I will be participating in the inaugural Colorado PGA Birdie Bash fundraiser event to raise funds for PGA REACH Colorado and Children's Hospital Colorado. I, alongside other Colorado PGA Professionals, will play 72 holes of golf in one day at The Ranch Country Club in an attempt to make as many birdies as possible! Please consider making a pledge per birdie to support these impactful organizations. YOUR GIFT MATTERS and will help us reach our goal of raising $110,000! National Development Manager at Toy Libraries Australia, and Senior Consultant (Occupational Therapist) at Franklyn Work Safety
It's not sexy. For lots of volunteer committees it can feel like a burden. For many starting out in the world of volunteer governance it can be quite frightening and overwhelming. But good governance is so important to ensure the sustainable future of our toy libraries. It has been super exciting to see all the toy libraries who have pulled on their big kid pants and sorted out their ACNC registration, the passion of our toy library community should never be underestimated. I am super proud to work for a peak body who provides practical support to enable volunteers to develop their understanding and mastery of good governance. If we want to bring more good people into the board rooms of Australia maybe we should all be looking to invest more in the good people who are already delivering on good governance right now in volunteer roles right across the country?
Good governance is key to helping toy libraries thrive. We're excited to share that over 85 toy libraries are now registered as charities, thanks to our work with the ACNC. This means they’re better equipped to serve their communities, attract support, and continue bringing joy to families. Strong governance isn’t just about rules—it’s about making a bigger impact together. A special thank you to our Victoria Member Development Officer, Erin Krusic-Golub, for her incredible work in guiding the latest round of registrations. I help create a legacy of success through effective leadership by guiding, mentoring, and training a team of executives
As I work for National Capital Area Council, BSA, I know firsthand that Scouting has a positive impact on youth and our community. A recent study conducted by The Harris Poll shows that those who have been involved in Scouting as youth or adults have what we are calling a “Scouting edge.” Scouts and Scouting alumni are more likely to engage in positive behaviors and are more likely to act in ways that are considered ethical and moral. Scouting also develops one’s leadership abilities and the competency to help others accomplish their goals. Good citizenship and helping other people at all times are tenants of Scouting and are part of the program at every level. This study confirms that Scouts and alumni are significantly more likely to vote, volunteer in the community, and take an active role in charitable organizations. To learn more about the Scouting Edge: https://lnkd.in/dMN4ZR6K I invite you to join me in support of Scouting by - Joining. Volunteering.
