As a 2024 WIF Business Fellow, I had the privilege of attending a special event hosted by WIF on Monday with Allison Hoffman, President of Starz. Our group photo captured a room full of passionate, driven professionals—many of whom are eager to level up in their careers. Two things Allison shared truly resonated with me and have shaped my thinking over the years as an entrepreneur and development consultant. 🟢 Executives are the intersection of the business and the creative. I pride myself on knowing both sides well. This is why I’m able to act as a mediator or translator between executives and writers during the development process. It’s about bridging that gap to ensure both the creative vision and business goals are aligned. 🟢 Know yourself well enough to know what works for you and follow that. This advice is something I’ve taken to heart, and it helped shape my response to a question I often get asked: Do you want to be an in-house executive vs. a consultant? My answer is no, and here’s why: --> Diversity of Content and Audiences: As a consultant, I have the opportunity to diversify the content I work on and the audiences I serve by working with different entertainment entities. One day, I could be selling, the next, buying. The variety keeps my work fresh and impactful. --> Freedom of an Entrepreneurial Life: I enjoy the freedom that comes with being an entrepreneur—particularly the ability to work from anywhere. I’m not confined to a 9-to-5 schedule or tied to a specific location. It’s about creating a life that suits my ambitions and personal needs. --> Clarity and Focus: As a consultant, I’m brought in to solve specific problems and work on clear, measurable goals. Unlike in-house roles, where duties can become diluted and ambiguous, I know exactly what I’m here to accomplish. This clarity helps me stay focused and effective. --> Power and Voice: As an in-house executive, I’ve seen how easy it is for your voice to get lost in the corporate environment. Hierarchy, politics, and competition often determine whether you're seen or heard. Early in my career, I was literally told to “be seen, not heard” by my SVP, and it crushed my confidence. As a consultant, my voice is respected—I’m brought in because they want to hear my perspective. No fighting for space. The space is already given to me. I’m grateful for the journey that’s led me to this point, where I can act as a change agent and empower both writers and production teams to bring their best ideas to life. The flexibility, clarity, and power of consulting are what continue to fuel my passion for the work I do. It allows me to protect my creative energy and deliver meaningful value to the projects I touch.
