This article explains how (some) VCs take value and turn it into personal fortunes, taking money out of productive use for speculative markets. Personal note: I’m a (very little) VC, a former SME CFO and controller-accountant, and an MBA. I cap our equity asks at investment value + reasonable and patient interest. So that value stays IN the company and we aren’t building companies to sell the company, we’re building them to support founders and employees in creating real value and a good life for them and their customers. No less. Some notes on the article: The 1/10 «unicorns» that typical VCs keep and grow are typically the companies that didn’t need a VC in the first place. A direct investment would have been far more advantageous to the founders and the staff. I think one day angel investing will be accessible from your standard brokerage account. The notion that angel investing is only meant for ultra wealthy people is long gone. It may be true in some cases, but the average angel investor today doesn’t fit that mold. They’re investing $1k-$5k checks into startups they love and care about. And this level of democratization will continue. I believe it’ll be as easy as scrolling through options and a few clicks from whichever account you use to manage your public stocks.

Tremendous has NO outside investors, and we brag about that fact. There are lines of people interested in investing, but we understand that VC money comes with "Strings Attached." I'm not saying this will always be the case, but it has benefited the company immensely to remain VC-free up to this point. Read more about how/why our founders made this decision.

I have been consistent in my views about Quantitative Easing (QE) and the 'financial evils' it created for continuing on long after it should have ended. QE put the world on the largest debt fuelled bubble of my life time and it will take years to work itself out of our economy and financial markets. We are moving back to a pre-QE world with a real risk-return tradeoff, where going fast isn't always the best option, where taking the time to build a solid foundation is good for a start-up, not bad. Where solid enterprise partners are as important as VC cash. This is the brave new (old) world of start-ups.
