This work is so important …. The policies, ethics, public thoughts and perceptions on this topic are all complex areas that need unpicking. But we must understand the barriers to building trust in this whole area if we are deliver the very real social and economic benefits of sharing public and private data…..
🗣 We're delighted to announce that tomorrow, Saturday, 7 September, sees the first of a series of public dialogue workshops from Smart Data Research UK and our partners Sciencewise. Sessions are taking place across the UK - in Belfast, Gateshead, Inverness, London and Newport. It's the start of a national conversation about smart data research. How to make data open by considering confidential and sensitive data? See our four-level open data pyramid that we proposed in #ASHVIN project 👇
💭How to create a fair environment when making data openly accessible? Not all data can or should be treated equally in relation to its commercial, social, and cultural context. Therefore, differentiating between levels and types of data is a key component of the data justice approach we proposed in #ASHVIN. Look at our four-level pyramid, which visualises how to incorporate datification and its good practices through data transparency, accessibility and agency. With this pyramid, we distinguish between four types of data associated levels of disclosure: meta data, raw data, report data and confidential data. Explore all the components of these types in our last deliverable by Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam 👇 🌐 https://lnkd.in/ePcpdDdU Meet one of our researchers investigating the topic, Selma Toktas, PhD in our #ResearchStories #1 👇 🗣 https://lnkd.in/eGVwu9K9 Want to dive deep into the topic? 🚀On the 25th of January, we have kicked off the new 'Data Bites' series at the department of Built Environment at TU/e Eindhoven University of Technology🚀 This series, designed to spread awareness and bring students and researchers of all levels closer to the topic of Research Data Management (RDM), offers a unique format. Each session features a quick 15 minute talk or demo, followed by a 15-minute chat, focusing on one specific RDM topic. From essentials, FAIR principles, documentation, versioning, storage to preparing data for publishing (to name just a few). Within 'Data Bites' we aim to simplify complex topics, making them easily digestible. The first session, held on January 25th, delved into the essentials of RDM, emphasizing its importance in academia, the benefits it brings, and common and best practices for managing research data. The insightful presentation and discussion were complemented by tasty muffins, setting the stage for an engaging series. 📚🧁 The next 'Data Bites' session, scheduled for the 29th of February in Vertigo 6.06, will shift the spotlight onto Open Science and FAIR practice, illustrating how they serve as catalysts for a more accessible and collaborative scientific world. ☕🌐 So, if you find yourself in Vertigo, grab your coffee, take a breather, and join us every last Thursday of the month, from 11:00 to 11:30, for a refreshing exploration of RDM with 'Data Bites'. We'll always provide some sweet bites to accompany your coffee. ☕🍩 Subscribe to our mailing list [https://lnkd.in/e8_3HfPV] to receive invites and stay updated on upcoming 'Data Bites' sessions! 📬 Let's make the journey of research data management enjoyable and enlightening together! 🚀📊 #DataBites #RDM #ResearchDataManagement #EindhovenUniversityofTechnology #BuiltEnvironment #KnowledgeSharing

Whenever I do a biotech website makeover, I start it with a kickoff meeting. It’s my chance to get curious and ask a bunch of questions. And two questions I ask every time are: what’s your claim and what’s your proof? What I’m looking for is some sort of persuasive information from the client. Now we all know biotech lives or dies by the data. Data’s super important. But one thing scientists need to understand is how to dramatize their data. People coming to your site don’t want to be immediately thrown into the deep end of your data. Sure, scientists, investors or partners want the big picture and are fully capable of interpreting it, but biotechs need to be able to distill all of their data down to a few important numbers. Why? Because big numbers smack site visitors in the face with the significance of what you’re trying to do. Pulling a few super-impactful numbers out of your data and making them huge catches the eye – instead of making their eyes glaze over. Does your site explain the importance of your novel science in a nanosecond?

Publishing qualitative research data is desirable if we want to keep science transparent and accessible without barriers. But there are various challenges to it, such as legal constraints or contextuality. Recognising these challenges is as important as considering the advantages of making qualitative data available for secondary use. 🤓 Take a look at our latest Data Story to learn more!!
