I am currently finishing up my Summer 2024 internship with Shape Corp. It has been an amazing experience being able to work under Dustin Brown as the Manufacturing Engineering Intern. My first major project was Collecting and Analyzing Maintenance Log History to determine what stations of the assembly cell needed improvement. Then my biggest project was a complete Form Press Die revision which is currently being implemented. Due to the maintenance history we determined that the die was creating scrap for the following station due to the tight tolerance of the alignment blocks which caused the component to rotate. Finally, my third biggest project was collecting data on dimple variations for the component. Which concluded that the festo motor pushing the component into the press die is skipping teeth which is pushing the component in too far. Thus why the dimple was too low on the component. Overall, I have enjoyed my experience with Shape as I improved my PFMEA skills due their workshops and working with my team on a PFMEA. Furthermore, improving my CAD skills due to redesigning a complete form press which was a great opportunity. I helped make the die easier on maintenance to disassemble/reassemble and I made the die easier to replace by having a majority of the components be off-the-shelf. I also improved my excel-macro skills by designing a program to sort maintenance logs and generate a dashboard to easily display the history of the machine and help identify patterns in maintenance. Overall, Shape has been an amazing company to work for. I learned and improved many skills. Plus I have learned there is a balance to beingan engineer. Balancing projects, multiple machines, and most importantly balancing work and personal life. Shape truly cares about their employees and promotes mental well-being. Sometimes when you are too far in your head about why a machine is underperforming, taking a walk or stepping away is the best thing you can do. Being a great and happy engineer is about balancing projects, machines, work, and your well-being. Thank you Shape Corp. for this amazing opportunity. Knowledge I’ve learned at my Internship with Gibbs Die Casting: • How dies function, as well as, how the die go together. • How difficult working on dies can be especially when things are not labeled properly. • The importance of paying attention to what is around you when working and to be careful when dies are being lifted by the crane. • How to prep inserts for the Nitride Process to help increase its durability. • How to use equipment like wire wheels, impacts, pipe threaders, wheel grinders, and multiple other tools that help complete tasks necessary to fixing the dies. • How to create Die Books using PowerPoint as well as how to link labels to print files for the specified part. • How to manipulate CAD Models through the NX software to see the parts required for the model to create the Die Books. • The importance of communicating clearly with people on my team so that things get done efficiently. Overall, I have learned so much through my internship with Gibbs Die Casting and can not wait to keep learning more over the summer. I am very grateful for the opportunity provided to me from the company as well as the teachers at the Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center who have taught me to be a professional worker. After a month of working in industrial design, here's what I have learned! I am so excited to share and show what I am creating but before that here are some of my key takeaways from this internship: 1. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁: It's not always what is taught in college💥 2. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁: As an intern, you work like a full-timer instead of a student. 3. 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: You are expected to do more in a day than your college ever expected in 10 days⏱️ 4. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀: You get to learn everything starting from the basics📕 5. 𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄: Turnaround time is faster than a pizza delivery🚚 6. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘁: You design 100 concepts and 2 passes through the selection (my ideas were never side-lined btw)🎖️ I'm so grateful for the awesome people at Bang Design who are helping me along the way. Finally, and after lots of trials and failures, I could say I have barely started my first steps on the fabrication track. Today I have completed my internship in glass etching techniques. I was so honored and blessed that for the first time I felt that I was doing something useful. The most important thing I have learnt was that I have discovered what I’m really passionate about. Being around lab tools, lots of research, lots of trials and accepting the idea that it’s OK to fail and try one more time. I could never imagine I could handle all of this but, thanks to Dr. Ahmed Abdrabou, eng Kirollos Ernest Matta and Eng Abdelrahman. They were always there for me answering any misunderstanding I faced, guiding me, and the most important thing was that they were very supportive. Thanks to my colleagues because they were the most energetic, hard workers and cooperative people I’ve seen. Finally, I want to thank Dr. Shaimaa Ali Mohamed for her great efforts with me. I barely met Dr. Shimaa 2 times during my internship and I can’t describe how she guided me, explained the desk thermal evaporator DTT to me in the simplest way, how it functions, how to observe the results on it and what to do when facing a malfunction. I was so blessed with this new experience. I’ve got the chance to practice many techniques such as applying exposure, preparing developers, different types of etchers, how to handle the recipe with the available materials in the cleanroom. The trials helped me recognize the effect of the timing of each step, how I could avoid the formed bubbles on my glass chip, how the thickness of the photoresist affects the results, how to etch the required design on the glass while avoiding the removal of the whole photoresist but only from the desired parts on the glass and other useful techniques.

As I've mentioned in my last post, today I'm going to share a short, insightful video tutorial for Generative Shape Design using CATIA. More precisely a powerful yet often overlooked feature presented to me by Fernando Petre on one of my GSD created during my last summer internship : the 'Show Historical Graph' tool. It has a powerful role of efficiently tracking and managing the history of the 3D design modifications. I have completed my ID200 Workshop Internship, which was held between 18-29 September under the coordination of my instructors YANKI GÖKTEPE and Canberk YURT. I would like to share with you what I learned during this process, which was very instructive for me. In the first week, we made a mouse. Since we used cardboard and bristol when I was in the first grade, I had no experience designing any products with foamboard before. I had never used the prototyping materials we used during our internship before. I had to start over 3-4 times to make the mouse I chose. After finding the right form, I moved on to the paste stage. After sanding from coarse to fine and applying 3-4 layers of wood putty, I applied primer. I applied the primer the same way I applied the putty, sanding and reapplying as it dried. I worked on sanding in great detail. After I thought I had reached a good surface, I finished it by painting and varnishing. This week I learned not to rush things. My mouse was stuck to the floor because I was impatient to apply the second coat of paint and painted it without waiting for it to dry. At this point, I acted calmly, cleaned the adhered surface, and reapplied the putty-primer steps to restore my product. In the second week, we were asked to make a mechanical version of our hand. Since I was more experienced compared to the first week, I did not rush and proceeded by planning the steps I implemented on the mouse. In my opinion, the hardest part of this week was the mechanism. Because each joint of our finger was required to move. Many mechanisms came to my mind, but since we had limited time, I thought quickly and took action and chose a mechanism with low risk. It was a week where I improved myself in using Dremel. Compared to the beginning of the internship, I feel more conscious and knowledgeable about workshop materials. The most important thing I learned to summarize the process is that being patient is part of a good design process. If we manage the process patiently and in a planned manner, the resulting product will be the closest to perfection.
