As organisations are exploring ways to reduce their impact on the environment, more of my clients are asking for support in reviewing their baseline carbon emissions and ways to develop a carbon reduction programme across their logistics activities.   The low hanging fruit is of course considering your modal mix. Where possible, teams should be encouraged to use ocean freight, the lowest emitter, compared to air freight which can release 7 times as much carbon.   Optimising container fill and consolidation at origin through our dedicated CFS hubs are additional ways to reduce your carbon footprint as well as drive down costs. .  Longer term strategies must include consciously committing to accessing cleaner fuel. With availability driven by pressure across the sector from governments and NGO’s, there is a long way to go to be able to meet current demand. Currently for SME’s particularly, this can be difficult as the volume of alternative fuels for ships is still in its infancy and contractual agreements are taking priority with the shipping lines. Have you ever wondered what happens to our old used cars and how the transition to e-mobility may impact that? To answer this question, we have compiled and compared various data sources from international trade databases and national statistics offices to understand how vehicles are currently traded across the globe. We have also found that vehicle exports are systematically underreported. We therefore recommend to governments: 🕵♂️ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲: 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 Better databases are needed to track where vehicles are registered, to enable the enforcement of environmental regulations and ensure safe disposal. This is also important to track the supply of critical minerals and locate end-of-life industries, such as recycling plants.
