“After a mass shooting, your community will become a circus of media, well-wishers, gun violence prevention groups, those wanting TV exposure to promote their own organization for fundraising opportunities, self described “experts” also wanting media attention, and inappropriate calls for museum archiving for temporary memorials before family members are even buried. You will also be inundated with calls from from community non profits from other mass shootings offering their “help”. Depending on the nonprofit, what they tell you may result in the retraumatization and revictimization of those suffering most.” Visit VictimsFirst.org to learn best practices.

This weekend, we’re going to race across more than 200 miles through 15 towns on Cape Cod with up to 20-pounds on our backs… Sure, it SUCKS, but do you know what SUCKS even more? It SUCKS to lose someone you love because there were no programs or services available for veterans, who suffered silently after active duty. According to recent surveys, almost 44 veterans kill themselves each day – and that’s 44 veterans a day way too many. The unintended consequences cut deep, reach far and last forever. No one should ever have to experience it, but, unfortunately, many do. How can we help? We can support AMAZING organizations, like HEROES IN TRANSITION INC , that offer unique programs and services to build stronger relationships and better communities for veterans, active service members and their families. ***So, you may be thinking… If it SUCKS, then why do we do it? Simple. WE DO IT – and will continue to do it – FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T.*** Please consider supporting the cause. #HeroesInTransition #Ruck4HIT #4ThoseWhoCant https://lnkd.in/eUr-hxWc

The LiveFree OKC Peace Needs Conference was truly a powerful experience. The conference brought together a diverse group of voices from law enforcement, engaged citizens, and activists to faith leaders and elected officials. Together, we focused on policies of peace and community-driven solutions to one of the most pressing issues in our society: gun violence. Some of the sessions tackled critical topics like gun violence in America, community violence intervention, school-based violence prevention, and how faith communities can become true houses of peace. What struck me the most was the commitment to finding common ground – putting politics aside to build consensus for a safer future. As the board president of LiveFree OKC, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication and heart of our team. Their tireless work in serving Ward 7, is making a real difference – more of our children are making it home safely every day. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished, but there’s still so much work to be done. If you believe in peace, justice, and a future free of gun violence, I invite you to join us. Follow the team on social media and consider donating to LiveFree OKC and supporting our mission. Together, we can continue to save lives and build a safer community. Hi LinkedIn friends! I am taking on the Army-Navy 100 Mile Challenge. All donations, support, partnership, and accountability is encouraged, as I begin logging miles on Dec 1 but am accepting donations starting now! Suicide rates among active-duty military members are currently at an all-time high since record-keeping began after 9/11 and have been increasing over the past five years at an alarmingly steady pace. In fact, some branches of the Armed Forces are experiencing the highest rate of suicides since before World War Il. In 2021, research found that 30,177 active duty personnel and veterans who served in the military after 9/11 have died by suicide - compared to the 7,057 service members killed in combat in those same 20 years. That is, military suicide rates are four times higher than deaths that occurred during military operations. For military families and parents, whose active duty loved one already sacrifices so much to protect our freedom, this trend is extremely troubling. l am not a runner but decided to take on this challenge to show solidarity with the brave people who continuously serve us everyday. 100 Miles is hard but it is nothing compared to the Mental Health struggle our service members often face. As a younger sister to an active service member who has mourned more than anyone should, it is important that we begin to have these hard conversations and offer support, even if we are just civilians. Thank you for your support and donations! https://lnkd.in/ecgJwAMe
