There is a solution to overheating in our homes. But the answer doesn’t lie in the New Zealand Building Code. There is a standard called Passive House, that calculates solar gains in a design, so we can design window size, orientation and shading to prevent overheating. To learn more about this standard, its called Passive House, download the free guide. https://lnkd.in/gn-_d_P6 #healthyhomes #design #passivedesign #architecture #newzealand

The problem with overheating in our homes is that there is no legal requirement to prevent this in our New Zealand Building Code. When you energy model the design using the Passive House Standard, the design has to preform to achieve a constant 20 degree temperature during winter and during summer. Gas stations aren't typically sight-seeing destinations. Unless you're on the lookout for a specific type of gas station, they're nothing more than a pit stop for fueling up and maybe grabbing a snack for the road. But not all gas stations are created equal- some are designed to be a destination. Check out this article for some of the best designed gas stations in the world: https://hubs.la/Q02vN9yP0 There's a gas station in Batumi, Georgia that showcases a unique, futuristic design. Stunning during the day and night, it includes a fuels station, McDonald's, and recreational spaces. Fundermax black and white exterior panels were featured in the rainscreen facade. 🍃 7 Ways to Incorporate Sustainability Into Your Public Park Design🍃 What was once nice to have, is now a firm necessity. Making a public park design more sustainable contributes to a friendlier environment and more pleasant open space for the community. Sustainable park designs are increasingly a requirement for municipalities’ tender processes. This is a challenge for architects, but the good news is that sustainable park design is more accessible than ever. Sustainable and green technology are widely available throughout the industry. Click the link below to explore seven ways to incorporate sustainability into your park design; from material selection to amenity location and everything in between. https://lnkd.in/gz_AYJEY #projects #accessible #urbanfurniture #publicamenities #architect #educationalspaces #architecturalspecification #outdoorlearning #seating #terraingroup #aluminium #outdoorfurniture

Right next to Rotterdam Central Station, PLP Architecture, together with ZUS, is designing a 130-meter-high tower with office space at the bottom and housing at the top. The wood-hybrid tower will have all kinds of canopies on the south that are equipped with plants or PV panels and that locally grow into balconies that are sometimes connected by stairs. Towards the street, the tower opens with a double-height plinth and the tower will have a grandstand staircase that runs from the inside to the outside and will activate this place. For PLP Architecture, the design of the facade is always inextricably linked to the concept and design of the building as a whole. How do urban planning, building physics, aesthetic, ecological, cultural, representative and economic characteristics influence each other? Which should receive more emphasis? With designs in the Netherlands, but also in Singapore and South Korea, Bakker will show how every assignment requires a different assessment of those characteristics. Over the past decades, we have designed the facade as a protective shield that keeps out heat, cold, rain and wind. But if we as people want to become more in line with nature and the planet, shouldn't we reconsider the role of the facade? What are your thoughts on the balance between aesthetics and functionality in architecture? I am so amazed to see this old building whenever I walk in front of it. This green wall looks great. Do we expect its' cooling effect on the building? Yet, how can this building be maintained? Vines cover some windows completely. #greenwall #NYC #architecture #greenarchitecture

Skylights are a great way to increase a space's brightness while reducing its energy consumption. Extensions provide perfect opportunities for their installation. Being typically situated alongside the main building, they often face few obstructions from above, allowing for more flexibility in installation. Here’s a quick progress update from one of our projects that made use of such an opportunity. #Skylights #NaturalLight #EnergyEfficiency #HomeExtensions #SustainableDesign #Architecture #BrightSpaces #InteriorDesign #EcoFriendly #HomeRenovation #GreenBuilding #ConstructionUpdate #ModernLiving #SkylightInstallation #EnergySaving #ProjectProgress

A Perfect Harmony of Design and Energy 🏠✨ This elegant new roof with a PV system was built on the edge of the Madestein recreation area, one of the largest green spaces in The Hague. As part of a partial renovation, 18 Meyer Burger Black solar modules were installed here. The special feature: Our modules were installed integrated into the roof to create a harmonious overall look. “The project was part of a partial roof renovation, including new special windows. We selected the best materials available to ensure an aesthetically outstanding look, with technically high-performance solar modules, high safety and long, maximum performance.” 🌟 Matthias Velten, Managing Director Zelfenergieopwekken.nu The result: a perfect interplay of these two components, which merge seamlessly thanks to the precise workmanship and angular accuracy of our modules. Oh, how beautiful is sustainability. 🌱💚 #Sustainability #SolarModules #GreenEnergy #RoofRenovation #MeyerBurger #TheHague #RecreationArea #PVSystem #Zelfenergieopwekken #EnergyEfficiency #EnvironmentalProtection #Future #Architecture

The homes of the future are already built. Globally, more than 50% of our existing buildings will be in use in 2050. In OECD countries, the number is 75-90%. In Europe alone, it is estimated 97% of these buildings need partial or extensive renovation to meet the highest energy standards. This underscores the imperative for renovations to focus on preparing these buildings for whatever the future holds. They should be long lasting, safe and durable and ready for a change of purpose. Rockpanel stands ready to support you in every step of the renovation journey – from conceptualisation, design to installation. Is your project sustainable? There were 3 key wins with Burnt House that we as an architecture practice fought for for the sake of sustainable design. 1) Retrofit over demolition. We advised against the QS’s advice of demolition and start again. Just because the existing building is ‘ugly’ doesn’t mean we can’t work with the existing fabric, upgrading and altering to suit the new use. We’ve since proved that it wasn’t at all cheaper to do this too. This mitigated a lot of waste and carbon. 2) Low embodied carbon materials Throughout the project, external materials that sequester carbon to internal finishes that regulate humidity. This is so important in an industry that is very complacent with concrete and steel proprietary systems. 3) Operational Carbon Many academics are now focusing on operation as opposed to fabric first when dealing with existing buildings. The importance of an efficient, consistent system that doesn’t use fossil fuels is massively important. Hopefully these systems become less carbon intensive as their popularity increases. We will try to update on in-use statistics. If you’ve a project in mind or wish to talk these points further, reach out! hello@o-ru.co.uk #sustainabledesign #lowcarbon #carboncounting #environmentalarchitecture #ecoarchitecture #architect
Final months of Burnt House now with finishes starting to go in and external works being cleaned up. Full ASHP system and solar installed with operational carbon being monitored. Insulated to almost passive standards with heat recovery system; even recycling the excess heat from the sauna and steam. All modelled and calculated prior to construction. Included in the comments are some existing building shots for context.
