Thank you to the Franklin County Digital Equity Coalition members who came together last Friday, June 21, to brainstorm the future of the coalition at this year’s Mid-Year Retreat. It is thoughtful collaboration like this that will continue to push this work forward to a more prosperous, digitally connected future for all. A special thank you to Grange Insurance for hosting our event and Carrie Maun-Smith for highlighting the wonderful work Grange is doing to help close the digital divide! We are grateful to Dr. Angela M. Chapman and Councilmember Nick Bankston for taking time out of their day to provide such thoughtful insights on the importance of Digital Equity in the post-COVID educational landscape to the group. Their thoughtful perspectives illuminated the necessary path forward, emphasizing how critical digital access is in shaping educational opportunities for students.

📣 As we celebrate the launch of the digital equity capacity NOFO, a significant step towards assisting the digital divide, let's reflect on the critical role of effective management of #publicfunds and understanding in achieving our goals. Incentivize #whatworks: Evidence-based process improvement, research, evaluation are key to ensuring our funding efforts are directed towards programs that truly move the needle. There is a significant body of research highlighting that a considerable portion of federal funds may not effectively achieve the intended outcomes. Instead, they may inadvertently accelerate growth that would have occurred regardless of the grant intervention. Provide long lead timelines: When considering funding programs through a grant program, it's crucial to provide adequate lead times. This allows organizations with less capacity to prepare, gather partnerships, and secure funding for the match, which may take up to a year to be incorporated into the annual budget. Be intentional with the #match: consider the match and proof of financing requirements, as these can pose significant barriers to organizations that lack access to capital but have the most effective programs to achieve our desired outcomes. Prioritize partnerships with those who have #jobs: For workforce development programs, partnering with industry partners and implementing requirements that ensure those who complete training programs remain with a job for a period specific to the industry can be highly effective. This approach has been proven to create a pipeline for those trained in active, good-paying jobs, which is a critical component of successful workforce development. By doing so, we can ensure that our efforts to enhance digital equity are not only well-targeted but also likely to yield the outcomes we seek. 🎯 Some good reads: -Barrett and Greene Inc.’s book (pictured below), -John M.
