This article is a few years old, but our new Policing in the US author Lorenzo Boyd makes a great point here and was the reason for his authoring his new textbook: “The problem is we treat a police academy kind of like we treat a military boot camp...We should treat it more like a classroom setting where we’re allowed to ask questions and use critical thinking skills.” Lorenzo, and his team of authors, are passionate about the police force and getting them outfitted to tackle the challenges facing the police today! Episode 4: School policing is 5% law enforcement. An officer should be an educator, mentor, and problem solver. Justin Seals is the Director of Operations at St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, former School Resource Officer unit leader, and U.S. Military veteran. We discussed: -Justin’s career as a Navy Corpsman, Army Chaplain, patrol officer, school police officer, SRO unit supervisor, and school security director. -How school policing has changed and evolved post-Columbine, post-Sandy Hook, post-Parkland, and post-Uvalde. -Differences in safety and security at public schools compared to private schools. -Systemic gun violence, gang violence, and teens who habitually carry guns every day on campus. -Dealing with students who are armed with knives and guns in ways that doesn’t risk escalating a police intervention into a shooting on campus. -Being a role model for students, creating relationships, and being proactive in defusing conflicts. -Mentality that a successful school police officer needs to have each day is completely different from a patrol officer working on the street. https://lnkd.in/ezNkXpub

In the latest in the new series of The Police Student focusing on Criminology in Policing, Policing Insight Academic Editor Dr Carina O'Reilly explores critical perspectives on crime, including Marxist approaches to criminology, white collar crimes and corruption, and critical race theory. ❝Critical perspectives on crime and criminology are of particular importance to student police officers, as they are increasingly dominant in some parts of public discourse, particularly among young people and ethnic minorities.❞ ❝Under such a system [Capitalism], Marx believed, laws reflected the interests of the rich – they were made by, and for, the powerful and the elite; and crime was inevitable.❞ ❝Tombs and Whyte (2013) assert that white collar crimes, including those involving workplace injuries, are treated as less serious than those of poor people, yet they have a much higher social cost than more visible street crimes.❞ ❝These ideas [critical race theory] are extremely important as they underlie many people’s understandings of concepts such as institutional racism. In this penultimate article in the current series of The Police Student focusing on Criminology in Policing, Policing Insight Academic Editor Dr Carina O'Reilly O’Reilly explores control theories, which concentrate not on why an individual is motivated to offend, but what persuades them not to, and what society – and officers – can do to support people to stop offending. ❝For police officers, these ideas can help understand how early intervention might help prevent crime, and how former offenders might be supported so that they don’t return to criminal behaviour.❞ ❝You can see that there are deep roots to the idea that social regulation of some sort is needed to explain why we don’t all commit crimes.
