With an article for Star Biz 7, this week Center for Market Education CEO, Dr Carmelo Ferlito, came back to the topic of corporate fragmentation in Malaysia. 98% of Malaysia's firms are MSMEs, but they produce only 38% of the GDP. The new government plan to increase MSMEs access to capital markets is useful, but it will be effective only if accompanied by a change in corporate culture. Only a higher degree of consolidation can generate technical progress, social mobility and social protection.

REALITY CHECK 2024 COMPARING THE ESTABLISHED TOP GLOBAL UNIVERSITIES WITH MALAYSIAN UNIVERSITIES. It turns out that in recent years Malaysia has caught up in number of papers and, more importantly, number of citations per paper, with the top global universities. This bodes well for Malaysia as an education hub in Asia. Malaysia offers good quality and is one of the most economical places to study in addition to a tropical climate, safety and great food. Three private universities from Malaysia are leading the pack. In terms of number of papers, Sunway University has gone from 27% in 2022 to 82% of the number of papers from Harvard University in 2024. One of the things I like the most about our initiative at the ICRH is the value of being internationalized and location-specific. Learning how different cultures, regions, and organizational norms play a role in internal communication and leadership communication is so important in an increasingly-globalized world.
