MBA programmes teach some great skills (including how to lose a social life) - but they don’t teach active listening. This is a fascinating new research paper by Institute of Customer Service and this stat below really stuck with me. Customer feedback is gold - and so is employee feedback. You will be amazed at some of the suggestions you could get if you know how to listen. People on the front line are listening to customers every day. If leaders aren’t taking the time to listen to those front line workers, they are missing incredible opportunities to improve the culture, improve customer experience, and improve how engaged people feel (and how long they might hang around and stay). So many leaders get to where they are by knowing how to make their voice heard, then being in a “broadcast” mindset - active listening is not easy, and it requires patience and authenticity. If you want to improve customer experience and employee experience, you have to show you want a culture where everyone has a voice.
