📢 Last week I had the privilege of attending the 3rd International Joint Conference on Water Distribution Systems Analysis & Computing and Control for the Water Industry (WDSA/CCWI 2024) in the beautiful city of Ferrara, Italy! ❗ The conference brought together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals to address critical topics such as #watersystemsafety, #reliability, and #digitalinnovation in urban water management. 💡 During the conference, I presented on drinking water contamination events and discussed how we can integrate model-based approaches using #PathoINVEST to enhance the decision-making process of water utilities in tackling such emergencies. The presentation focused on leveraging advanced modeling tools to help identify the contamination source, thus improving response strategies and ensuring public safety. #PathoINVEST is part of the PathoCERT project and is a product of a joint collaboration between KWR Water Research Institute, KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, and PHOEBE Research and Innovation Ltd that recently won the "Digital Water Award 2024" by Water Europe. #WDSACCWI2024 #WaterIndustry #SmartWaterSystems #Innovation #DrinkingWaterSafety #PathoINVEST #Pathogencontamination

One small step for Berkeley, one giant leap for building controls and analytics (sorry, couldn't help myself). This project demonstrated a process that we hope will become common practice over the ensuing decade--"one-click" installation and configuration of building control and analytics software, a capability that we have come to expect in many other software fields but which the building software industry has conspicuously lacked. The core technology behind this capability is the "Semantic Model" of the building and its systems, a model that control and analytics software can query in order to discover the building and configure itself to it. Congrats to the Berkeley team for this exciting step. Looking forward to many more steps from all corners of the building automation community. #buildingautomation #semanticmodeling
🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Therese Peffer, the associate director for CIEE and the CITRIS and the Banatao Institute Climate initiative, who was awarded the 2024 Best Paper Award from ASHRAE with Drs. Carlos Duarte and Paul Raftery from the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) and Anand Krishnan Prakash from Berkeley Lab. Duarte served as the lead author; Peffer was the principal investigator behind the research project, titled Brick, that generated the paper. The paper, “Field Demonstration of the Brick Ontology to Scale up the Deployment of ASHRAE Guideline 36 Control Sequences,” presents a standardized solution for implementing advanced building control sequences that allow #HVAC systems to operate more efficiently. The team integrated existing standardization projects and open-source support tools in a Berkeley, California office building to showcase a scalable and portable control system that can unlock significant #energy and cost savings. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dY8x5BNC
