Right after the closing session of the Animal AgTech Innovation Summit last week in Amsterdam, I rushed to Schiphol Airport to meet my younger son and his girlfriend. Both are just finishing their master studies at Delft University in a course exploring how to deal with complex systems from an economic and technical perspective. We used the two hours prior to my departure to brainstorm about possible industries and companies they could find a job. Of course, at such occasions, I never forget to tell how exciting and relevant our industry is…! The program at the conference addressed a broad selection of quite specific subjects around innovation and sustainability, with plenary sessions and round table discussions complemented by startup showcases introducing amazing products and technologies. One take-away for me from these two days is the simple reality that many of the key challenges faced by the livestock industry can only be resolved through a well-coordinated joint effort between all stakeholders involved. At the same time, listening to the discussions last week also illustrates how difficult it is to align multiple interests and priorities in a way that players in an increasingly complex system buy in. The Animal AgTech event highlighted the need for collaboration and innovation, and consequently also the crucial role of leadership in driving these efforts forward. This theme resonates strongly with a recent K&R thought piece, which explores evolving leadership skills required to shape a sustainable future in the food value chain. For remote or off-grid farms, Agri-PV can provide a reliable source of electricity, reducing energy costs and enhancing Solar panels can provide partial shading for crops, protecting them from extreme weather conditions like excessive heat or hail, which can enhance crop yields and reduce water requirements. The shade provided by solar panels can reduce water evaporation from soil, potentially leading to water savings in irrigation.

This summer has been productive for lensor.io, marked by significant achievements and valuable learnings. Here are some highlights from July: 1. Growing User Base 🤝  We doubled our user base, and successfully onboarded more farmers to our platform. Our data-driven solution, designed to enhance resilience in agriculture, is gaining interest and traction. 2. MVP Developments 🔨  We made substantial progress on our Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The enhancements have been positively received by our users, bringing us closer to our official launch. 3. Pilot Projects and Collaborations 🚀 We secured exciting new collaborations and pilot projects. Climate-friendly and resilient agricultural practices are becoming increasingly important, and we look forward to sharing more details about these upcoming collaborations soon.

Really looking forward to the AgTech Salon in Bonny Doon in about 6 weeks, and even more looking forward to the conversation with Eric Morgan and Alfonso Bustamante on the dynamics that are evolving in real time between CA ag and Peru ag. Peru is making some big bets on infrastructure ($3.5B port with China about 50 miles north of Peru that will service much of Peru and surrounding countries), water storage (government and private), and economic development of ag and tourism that is creating a big influx of capital and acreage and facilities coming into production. California has lost 4.6M acres in 25 years while Peru has grown ag exports from $465M to $10.5B and forecast to continue increasing. Sacramento may not be aware of the scope of the battle, but Lima and Peru definitely are and are making a completely different set of policy decisions. Peru welcomes new ag operators, invests in economic development, infrastructure, and water storage. California pushes ag acreage to the side with SGMA instead of adding water storage, invests in uneconomic development with net zero mandates that add costs and risk to every operation, and has key ports that are among the world's least efficient (hello LA and Long Beach). Legitimate question for California folks - put yourselves in the shoes of a CA grower faced with the realities above and ask yourself what you would do if Peru came calling and how good would the offer have to be to get you to at least fly down and have a look? Yes, there are risks - political instability, some big infrastructure challenges beyond the new port (roads and rails), and some personal and corporate risks you don't get in CA. Benefits for the department: lecturer become more aware of careers available from the subject that they teach so can highlight the importance of the subject to their students. The school creates valuable links with local industries. The visit helps to fulfil the requirements of providing careers advice to their students. Benefits for the organizations: Hosting an industry visit provides the opportunity to demonstrate the breadth of jobs and careers available within the organization. Staff acting as guides can develop their communication and presentation skills. The visit may help to fulfil organization’s corporate social responsibility obligations and help to build links with the school and community that will enhance the profile of the organization. Liaising with department can allow staff within the organization to acquire an understanding of curriculum. developments and therefore, the range of skills that new potential employees possess. The scheme helps to build stronger links between employers and department.
