Many nonprofits are focused on improving the lives of women, children, and other underserved groups. For me, this highlights the critical need for women to be present at the decision-making table. Equally, having a board that includes individuals from the communities the organization serves can be a powerful force for change. I work with nonprofits of all shapes and sizes, and I truly believe we should concentrate on fostering collaboration and inclusivity to drive real progress. Why are communication, respect and honesty important to women? Communication: this comes down to connection. Making sure we are on the same page can save us stress and anxiety. Respect: This is something that’s difficult to earn and easy to lose. This should be mutual between leaders and employees. Too often managers ego’s get in the way of this. Honesty: if you want someone to give you their time and hard work every day, be upfront. The truth isn’t always easy to face or admit. Leaders make mistakes. Mistakes don’t define someone, it’s how they own them. The right thing is not always the easy thing. Why women? While I think men often want these things too, too many women have found that these are lacking in their previous managers.
