On this #DesertificationandDroughtDay2024, we express deep concern that “Odisha faces multifaceted land use and management challenges, including significant deforestation with a 9.0% reduction in forest cover and a 37.6% increase in built-up areas, indicating rapid urban expansion and habitat fragmentation. 5.4 million hectares of land in Odisha are affected by desertification, and approximately 30% of its geographical area is affected by land degradation.” (MoEFCC 2023, quoted in SwitchON Foundation (Environment Conservation Society) 2024, LAND DEGRADATION, DESERTIFICATION, AND DROUGHT IN ODISHA, Executive Summary) #UNLandandDrought https://lnkd.in/gcNp2Qhw

Human cost In Induced Climate-Change by a barrage on a transboundary river Ganges by big brother India: Bangladesh a lower-riparian delta having hundreds of big and small rivers across the country. Its peoples livelihood, ecosystem, agricultural production, fisheries, communication, business, general environment, flora-fauna mostly dependent on sweet water of rivers. However, when Farakka barrage was test commissioned by India for few hours which never stopped till today. It cost a heavy toll on the livelihoods, environment, navigation and water resources of Bangladesh. Its first casualty was Gorai-Madhumati-Baleshor river(372 km long) which carries sweet water of the Ganges (called Padma in Bangladesh) to southern mangrove forest the Sundarbans. It may be mentioned that Gorai is the main channel of Padma to carry water to south-west to southern part of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has some uneven treaty to share dry period water of Ganges between India and Bangladesh. But which has nothing to do to increase the flow of water of the dying river as India is diverting most of water (40,000 cusec) to other areas for navigation. Due to this barrage soil and water salinity within 100 km of Bangladesh from sea to inward has increased alarmingly posing serious health and environmental problem. India is also suffering due to this barrage as it is facing prolonged flood/river erosion in Bihar and part of West-Bengal state. Only solution is to decommission of the barrage, though it will not make the environment favorable as like before the barrage. Bangladesh lost trillion of Dollars due to this man made disaster. We hope India will hear peoples voice not to destroy the ecosystems by man-made disaster like Farakka barrage. It must decommission the 50 years barrage to save millions of peoples of its own area and in Bangladesh though catastrophic damage has already made.

Satabhaya and other coastal villages in Odisha are at risk of extinction due to a combination of factors, including climate change impacts and infrastructure development. Sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and altered ecosystems from infrastructure development all contribute to the vulnerability of these communities. To save the coast, we need comprehensive solutions that address both the immediate and long-term challenges faced by these communities. Let's work together to protect our coastal areas. #Coastal Erosion #Climate Change #Infrastructure Development #Save the Coast

The recent Wayanad landslides have not only claimed lives but also shattered families, homes, and dreams. This landslide is a tragic event that has highlighted both natural and human-induced factors contributing to such disasters. The incident has sparked a debate on the causes, ranging from climate change impacts to inadequate implementation of ecological recommendations. Global warming and climate change have intensified the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall. The warming sea provides more moisture to the air, which leads to the formation of dense cloud clusters over hilly regions like Wayanad, resulting in intense rainfall. Altered monsoon patterns contribute to unseasonal and heavy rains that saturate the soil, making it more prone to landslides. Deforestation, construction and unscientific land use have weakened our environment. Replacing native trees with shallow-rooted plantation crops like tea and coffee has made our soil fragile and vulnerable to landslides. Studies and high-resolution maps show that regions like Sikkim and Kerala are highly susceptible to landslides due to their topography and ecological conditions. The Western Ghats are ecologically sensitive, and human activities such as deforestation, construction, and plantation farming exacerbate the risk of landslides. These include the inherent characteristics of the land, such as soil type, rock formations, geomorphology, and slope angles, which determine the land’s vulnerability to landslides. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted that flood cycles will become more frequent and intense, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. Increasing the number of monitoring stations to detect landslide-prone areas and hotspots is crucial. Kerala needs to develop self-reliance in disaster management. The people of Wayanad have been directly affected by the changes in their environment, largely driven by both global climate trends and local land use practices. The Wayanad landslide is a complex issue with multiple contributing factors. While climate change plays a significant role, human activities and administrative decisions are equally important. To everyone reading this, let’s not wait for another tragedy. Let’s honor the lives lost in Wayanad by committing to a sustainable and resilient future. Share this message, spread awareness, and let’s work together to protect our planet and our people. 🙏 #Wayanad #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Environment #DisasterManagement

Let’s not destroy our waterbodies in the name of development and rather value their importance. India is endowed with extraordinarily diverse and distinctive traditional waterbodies found in different parts of the country, commonly known as ponds, tanks, lakes, vayalgam, ahars, bawdis, talabs and others. They play an important role in maintaining and restoring the ecological balance. They act as sources of drinking water, recharge groundwater, control floods, support biodiversity, and provide livelihood opportunities to a large number of people. Lets respect, rejuvenate, repair and restore our water bodies our proud. #Pondman #Waterbodies #India #CSR #Sdg #ESG

🚨Attention Corporates, NGOs, and Individuals: Most of India is experiencing severe heatwaves🌡️. In these areas, it's crucial to “pledge and plan” for tree planting, but “avoid actual planting during the heatwave” as it's nearly impossible for saplings to survive. World Environment Day - June 5th: Theme: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Check your local climate and act accordingly: - Coastal areas and North/East states:Plant now! - Heatwave-affected regions:Prepare and plan, plant later! Join us this World Environment Day in making a real impact by planting the right way! Let's restore our land and combat desertification and drought together. 🌱💚 #WorldEnvironmentDay #ActNow #SaveOurPlanet #ClimateChange #ExtremeWeather #Heatwave #Cyclones #Floods #India #LandRestoration #Desertification #Drought #EnvironmentalAwareness #ClimateAction #SustainableFuture #EcoWarriors #GoGreen Dr. Sangeeta Verma, Chartered Forester Rachit Saxena, Devroopa Paul, Mukesh Rathod, Rajiv Saxena, Naily Laha, Dalia Chakrabarty !!
