Last week, I mentioned the importance of commercial laundries, particularly in relation to how little the average consumer might think about them. In another field, #wastewatertreatment and #stormwatermanagement are also vital parts of our lives (and if we're being honest, like a referee in sports, we usually only notice them when something goes wrong). Like fresh towels in your hotel room from the commercial laundries example, stormwater management and wastewater treatment don't just happen magically. They require many talented, dedicated people working together, leveraging data and science, and studying the impacts of their efforts over time to tweak their approach as needed. In the article below, Dober's Angela Espy reviewed some research, utilizing data from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, that analyzed water management practices on water quality in several bodies of water in the Chicago area. SENECA NATION WARNS PUBLIC OF DANGEROUS OVERFLOWS FROM OLEAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT INTO OHI:YO’: More than 180,000 gallons of untreated sewage discharged into river; Nation insists City, State address ongoing dangerous discharges.   The Seneca Nation is warning the public of another dangerous discharge from the City of Olean Wastewater Treatment Plant into the Ohi:yo’ (Allegheny River). On Wednesday, April 3, the City of Olean Wastewater Treatment Plant reported two overflows of untreated sewage into the river, due to heavy rains in the area. The first overflow occurred at approximately 12:28pm and lasted for 110 minutes. A second overflow was reported at 7:59pm, lasting for 68 minutes. The two overflows accounted for approximately 186,000 gallons of untreated sewage discharged into the river. The Seneca Nation’s Emergency Management department is advising everyone to cease any recreational activities in or around the river for the next few days. For more: https://lnkd.in/er5PdhD8

The Day That Changed My Career in Wastewater Management Forever My name is Dave Bartholomew. My family-owned company, Bartholomew Water Services, helps plan, build, operate, and maintain water management systems throughout Arizona. One day about ten years back, a group of unqualified “water experts” tried to fix a lift station. They did what’s called a confined entry, and they did it improperly. Basically, they sent a kid down into a wet well to see how the pumps were doing. He was immediately overcome by hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide fumes. In lethal doses. To his credit, I suppose, the boy’s father went down in the well to try and save him. Sadly, he was also overcome by the fumes. As was his brother, who went down after both of them. In the final tally, the father and brother died rescuing the boy. Who lived. But this tragedy should never have happened. Nor would it if you hire actual experts in wastewater management systems. On July 16, 2024, Permit Sonoma will be seeking the Board of Supervisor’s authorization to submit a Local Agency Management Program (LAMP) to the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board. This submission is crucial as it aligns with the State’s Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS) Policy, which mandates each jurisdiction to apply to the Regional Water Board to manage their local septic systems. 🚨 Important Update: The County’s OWTS Manual, containing local policies for regulating septic systems, has been updated! Vital Water Transmission Project Underway for Upstate New York! In a significant development for the Hoosick Falls community, construction has commenced on a pivotal water infrastructure project aimed at addressing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) contamination. Governor Kathy Hochul's recent announcement heralds the beginning of construction on a permanent water transmission line, representing a crucial step towards securing a safe water supply for local residents. This project, part of a 2023 agreement between the state of New York and companies Saint-Gobain and Honeywell, involves laying approximately 6,800 linear feet of raw water transmission line. State agencies DEC and DOH will oversee the construction process, with activities slated to begin in May 2024.
