London Bridge lighting We did a callout to a shop which had lost a lot of lighting and power. They had done all the right things and needed an electrician. What can you check before you call out an electrician that might save you the cost of the callout. If you have lost all power and lighting to a premises, it may be worth considering whether there is a power cut. Just because the property next door has power look along the street and see if there is others that are out. Electricity is supplied in three phases so pretty much every third property is on a different supply. The next thing to check is your fuse board, are any of the safety devices down. If they are try pushing them up, you will see in most fuse boards that there are some devices that are wider than others. These RCD units can control more than one circuit. If you find one of these down, switch off the narrower switches around it, then try putting the RCD up. If the RCD then goes up, turn the narrower MCB safety devices on one at a time. If when you switch on one of the narrow MCB safety devices, the RCD goes down, put that MCB down and switch everything else back on. This will give you most of the power and lighting while you wait for an electrician. At JT Barnes Electrical, we always try to help people over the phone to get power at least partially back on straight away. Although it is not specifically outlined in the law, it is generally recommended to get your electrical equipment tested (or inspected) regularly to ensure safety, as it must be safe for employees under The Electricity at Work Regulations. The frequency of testing will vary depending on how often equipment is used and what type of premises you own. For example, commercial properties such as shops, offices and warehouses require testing every 3-5 years, but this may increase to 1-3 years in places such as restaurants and cinemas. Lead Horror! Ancient Cabling Puts Farnborough Business at Risk! Attention Farnborough business owners! A shocking discovery of deteriorating lead cabling still in use in a commercial property highlights the critical need for regular electrical inspections. Lead cabling, often hidden out of sight, can degrade over time, posing severe safety risks. This ancient infrastructure is a ticking time bomb, waiting to cause potentially catastrophic failures. Regular electrical inspection and testing to BS 7671 standards are crucial to identify and mitigate these hidden dangers. Older electrical systems not only fail to meet current safety standards but also increase the risk of electrical fires, shocks, and equipment malfunctions. Ensuring your electrical systems are up to date and compliant is vital for the safety of your employees and the smooth operation of your business. Don’t let outdated electrics jeopardise your business. Schedule a thorough inspection with ESI: Electrical Safety Inspections to ensure your Farnborough property is safe and compliant. Contact us at 01276 300351 to book an appointment today. Do you have switchboards which still have Eaton ELQ RCBOS with a green button? I’m surprised that our electricians keep finding #switchboards with these Safety Recalled breakers in #commercial and #strata #buildings all over Sydney. There’s a good reason that these Eaton ELQ-TW RCBOs were subject to a Safety Recall Notice almost 10 years ago - they can explode and catch #fire. This is not a hypothetical - I’ve unfortunately witnessed it first hand back in 2014. If you’re paying a contractor to carry out RCD testing at your switchboards, please make sure they are also checking for the many different types of safety recalled switchgear that are still commonly found in use around Sydney. It is disappointing to see known hazards such as these with a fresh “RCD test OK” sticker on the board - but we see this frequently. If you’re not sure - call us and we can carry out an audit for you. Let’s get rid of faulty switchgear out of our buildings and workplaces.

Electrical systems are an integral part of our daily lives, powering our homes, offices, and industries. However, this vital aspect can encounter various issues, one of them being a short circuit. A short circuit occurs when an electrical connection between two conductive materials with varying voltage levels is established. This article will delve into the different types of short circuits, their causes, and some effective prevention measures. Whether you own a home or run a business, it is essential to grasp the intricacies of short circuits in order to ensure the safety and optimal functioning of your electrical system. Types of Short Circuits Short circuits can be classified into three main types – series, parallel, and line-to-ground short circuits. 1. In a Series Short Circuit, the circuit current stops because there is a break or open circuit in the path. This break can be caused by damaged electrical wires or faulty electrical components. As a result, the electrical current is unable to flow through the circuit. 2. Parallel Short Circuit happens when an abnormal path is formed between two conductive materials with different voltages. This can happen due to a damaged electricity wire or an unintentional contact between two wires. Excessive current flow can pose a serious risk to the electrical system and its components if a path is formed. 3. Line-to-Ground Short Circuit is the most common type and can be extremely dangerous. It happens when the electrical current flows from one phase line to a ground wire or object. This can occur due to damaged insulation, improper wiring, or faulty grounding systems. Such short circuits can lead to electrical fires, electrical shock, and severe damage to electrical equipment.

Did you know that understanding the color coding of your home's electrical wiring can be the difference between safety and hazard? In most residential homes, the green or bare copper wire represents the grounding system, ensuring your electrical setup is properly grounded. The white wires typically signify the neutral wire, while black wires are the hot or line side of the circuit. Both the neutral and hot wires carry current and, if mishandled, can cause serious harm. Ensuring correct terminations and the appropriate wire sizing for each circuit's amperage is crucial for the safety of your system. Your breaker may indicate the maximum amperage allowed, but it doesn't account for the cumulative load of all appliances connected to that circuit. Proper sizing and termination ensure that your system can handle the load safely, reducing the risk of electrical fires or other dangers. If you're unsure about the electrical infrastructure in your home or need professional advice, 4th Systems is here to help. Our team of experienced electrical contractors is ready to provide authoritative guidance and ensure your home's wiring is safe and up to code. ⚡ Project Update! Bromley College ⚡ It has been 40 days since we returned to our project in Bromley. The end of June sees us in a great position as we continue to work towards achieving within a tight programme! Today, we start workshop 5, consisting of: Primary Containment: Over 200 meters of trunking have been installed, as well as over 100 meters of tray, all at high level. Secondary Containment: Over 100 meters of conduit mounted for lighting supplies, access control, and CCTV. Distribution Boards: The final two of five distribution boards within three workshops have been mounted with breakers fitted, and circuits are ready for the second fix. There are two more to be installed in the coming weeks. Wiring: Over 2000 meters of cable have been installed to a number of interlocking isolators, lighting, cleaner sockets, fused spurs, and other small power systems. Second Fix: Second fix for small power has commenced and is 50% complete across three workshops. Lighting: The lighting is almost fully installed, second fixed, and tested, and is nearing commissioning across the three workshops, with workshop four soon to follow. Actuator Supplies: Actuator supplies are fully installed and the wiring tested. The circuits require a functional test, and then the commissioning can be finalised. Actuators: The actuators have been 100% replaced in three workshops, with only one workshop to go. A big thank you to our client, Ensigna Construction Limited for providing us with the opportunity to support four students in completing work experience with our company on their project. In the last two weeks, they have worked across our sites, soaking up the experience and working hard during a blisteringly hot period. All of them have embraced the opportunity, and we are honoured to give these young people a chance to work with our team in a competitive field. We wish them all well for their future! Also, a big shout-out to our valued supply chain who continue to meet our project needs! Regent Electrical Distributors Phase Electrical Distributors Ltd. Armaflo AT&T GB LTD Moss Electrical Co.
