Allie Miller, Designer for Smith Gee Studio, presented her senior thesis research at this month's Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) regional conference. Her research is titled "Activating Public Life Through Street Furniture: A Sustainable Approach to Seating Design and Community Engagement." It was centered around #Nashville's 1st and 2nd Avenues, the riverfront, and how to activate the zones, engage public life, support businesses, and promote sustainability. A large focus was her design for a modular bench system that integrates digital learning, anti-hostile design, and universal design principles. Way to go, Allie! #design #integrateddesign #architecture

The groundbreaking of the Nashville Youth Campus for Empowerment (NYCE) signifies more than just the beginning of a new building; it marks the start of a pioneering movement to bring meaningful change to the city’s juvenile justice system. After years of dedicated effort by Judge Sheila D.J. Calloway, Juvenile Court Clerk Lonnell Matthews, recent mayoral leadership, and other visionary public servants, this project is set to transform the lives of young people, offering them a pathway to a brighter future. The NYCE Campus will be a “family-oriented, trauma-informed campus designed to support the intrinsic value of all members of the community.” It will house the Davidson County Juvenile Court, a pre-trial housing facility for justice-involved youth, and various community resources for families in need. Key features include a 24-hour assessment center for youth in crisis, private meeting rooms for mediation, and a safe exchange facility for therapeutic custodial visitation. Situated on a 14-acre site on Brick Church Pike, the campus was strategically chosen for its accessibility, ample parking, and proximity to additional resources — all with the goal of providing growth, opportunity, and empowerment to young people from birth to adulthood. Smith Gee Studio is honored to partner with DLR Group on this transformative project, contributing as interiors lead on the public areas of both the Courthouse Building and the Family Services/Respite Center, and as architect for the primary parking garage on the campus.
