Finding a pristine dark sky is one of those things that seems simple enough, until you try to do it. I’ve recently gone down a rabbit hole of astronomy and astrophotography. I wanted my kids to see Saturn’s rings and the Milky Way with their own eyes, and take an interest in how the universe works. But we found our search severely limited by city lights. Now we find ourselves factoring in darkness when we travel, just so we can see something that was visible to everyone for most of human history. When did the night sky become an excursion, something some of us may even have to pay to see, instead of something that’s available to everyone? Can you see the Milky Way in your backyard or the closest parking lot? Fortunately, this is a very solvable problem, if we can all put our minds to it. In the meantime, go out and try to find the Milky Way. Maybe you’ll find a passion for darkness like we now have.
Manager of Assist & Medical Management @ Seven Corners, Inc. - Helping travelers worldwide return home safely! Dark Sky Advocate - Save the Night Sky!
Did you know? - 1/3 of people on Earth are unable see the Milky Way. It’s impossible from where they live. 🤯 - 90% of Americans have never seen the Milky Way with their own eyes. 🥺 A recent camping trip at the Dry Tortugas National Park gave me the opportunity to see the Milk Way overhead. About a year ago we visited our first Dark Sky Park and it changed the way I travel. I now schedule trips around new moons and what dark skies we can visit and check off our “dark sky bucket list”. Check out the work DarkSky is doing to protect the night sky, developing dark sky parks, preserves, sanctuaries, cities, and communities. And learn how you can protect the night sky where you live! #darksky #ida #darkskyadvocate #darkskyinternational #astronomy #travel Photo credit Dylan Bailey

📹 : #TheAZHikeaholics What’s your favorite national forest?🌳🌲🏞️ Did you know Arizona has six national forests covering nearly 12 million acres? The forests in Arizona are unique, and I love them all. 🌲Coconino: encompass Sedona’s beauty, our tallest peak in the state, and thousands of acres of Ponderosa Pine + recreation opportunities 🌵Tonto: encompasses land from the Sonoran desert to the Mogollon Rim, from cactus to tall pines, embodying a Land of Many Uses. #TontoNationalForest offers a variety from the saguaro cactus to the ponderosa pine! 🌲Apache-Sitgreaves: encompasses forests above the rim with many forest lakes, great trails, camping, and pure beauty ⛰️Coronado: a sky island paradise! I love the mountain ranges this national forest encompasses and going from desert to pines from base to top 🌲Prescott: encompasses mountain ranges and land and offers so many options to enjoy the outdoors, from hiking to camping and even hang gliding 🌳Kaibab: split into two sections divided by the Grand Canyon: I love the north section for its high elevation and the sheer number of aspens #NationalForest #MyPublicLands #Arizona #ExploreArizona #VisitArizona
