To AI....Or Not to AI....that is the question. Especially when the office of the notary public is considered. Sharing this incredible article from the National Notary Association regarding AI and the changing role of the notary public. https://lnkd.in/emdeRycR In the last 5 years the term "AI" has become a staple of our day-to-day vocabulary. With the rise of great tools like ChatGPT, AI automated CRMs, predictive settings on our smartphones, and even built in AI tech on our favorite social media platforms...we can all agree that AI is here to stay. But like all new tech, AI has a darkside. And the rise of synthetic identity fraud is being almost single handedly powered by fraudsters leveraging the power of AI for malicious acts. Damages from AI crimes is already in the multiple billions of dollars, and will only continue rising. And although AI fraud detection tech is under development and getting better...there is still a tried and true method of preventing fraudulent activity...the use of an ethical and qualified notary public 👍. With many notarial pros waving their Remote Online Notarization (RON) flags, hoping the tech takes over as the default method of executing notarial acts...I personally am in no hurry for this to take effect...especially since it opens up one more avenue for these AI fraudsters to manipulate. Are you a notary public pondering how your role will be impacted by AI? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments. #notarypublic #mobilenotary #mobilenotarypublic #signingagent #loansigningagent #notarysigningagent #notarialpro #notaryindustry #notaryservice #workwithintegrity #nationalnotaryassociation #loansigningsystem #professionalnotary #ethicalnotary #morethanjustastamp #njnotary #beaprofessional #lovemyjob #lovemyindustry #greatarticle #notarylife #aifraud #documentfraud #fraudcrimes #aicrimes #fraudprevention

Cybersecurity expert says the next generation of identity theft is here: 'Identity hijacking' Deepfake technology — a synthetic representation of a person's likeness — is not new technology. Think Mark Hamill's de-aged return as a young Luke Skywalker in an episode of 'The Mandalorian' in 2019. Artificial intelligence is likewise nothing new. But when it launched at the end of 2022, ChatGPT made AI technology cheaply accessible to the masses, simultaneously setting off a race between nearly all of the mega-cap tech corporations (and a bunch of startups, too) to ship more powerful models. The risks and active threats incited by this recent proliferation of AI have been called out by certain experts for months: enhanced socioeconomic inequity, economic disruption, algorithmic discrimination, misinformation, disinformation, political instability and a whole new era of fraud. The past year has seen mounting cases — in a variety of formats — of AI-generated deepfake fraud, some that have attempted to squeeze money from unsuspecting civilians, some that have served to mock artists and some that have attempted to humiliate celebrities at scale. Last week, scammers armed with AI-generated deepfake technology stole around $25 million from a multinational corporation in Hong Kong, according to AFP. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they were given the money. A finance worker at the firm moved $25 million into designated bank accounts after talking to several senior officers, including the company's chief financial officer, on a video conference call. No one on the call, besides the worker, was real. The worker said that, despite his initial suspicion, the people on the call both looked and sounded like colleagues he knew. "Scammers found publicly available video and audio of the impersonation targets via YouTube, then used deepfake technology to emulate their voices ... to lure the victim to follow their instructions," acting Senior Superintendent Baron Chan told reporters. https://lnkd.in/eN2PT9zM

A fascinating read about AI and identity theft, but also a bit chilling. It's one thing to deal with fraudulent charges, but the idea of someone completely hijacking your identity is on another level. It's a scary reminder of our vulnerability in the digital age. 😨 #deepfakes #AI #identitytheft https://lnkd.in/eCM_J_95

Warren Buffett recently highlighted at a conference that AI-powered fraud is set to become the next major "growth industry" – and it's rapidly accelerating. ➡️ AI Scams Identified The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has uncovered thousands of fraudulent schemes where AI-generated avatars impersonate figures like Elon Musk or entities such as Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and even X (formerly Twitter). These audacious scammers attempt to swindle money from unsuspecting individuals. For instance, Gizmodo reported on a New Jersey resident who lost $18,880 during an online Tesla Cybertruck event. ➡️ New Fraud Methods Interactive fakes, such as real-time phone calls or video conferences with seemingly real individuals, are becoming increasingly common. A Philadelphia lawyer, Gary Shilthorn, testified at special Senate hearings about AI and fraud, where he detailed an almost-victim experience. Fraudsters used AI to clone his son’s voice, claiming his son was in a car accident and needed $9,000 for bail. Stay vigilant. ➡️ Marketplace Frauds Scammers are also "operating" or rather hunting on marketplaces. Cybersecurity experts note that with artificial intelligence, fake sellers are becoming much harder to detect. Before making a purchase, they advise checking the seller through social media, Google reviews, or by directly calling the company. ➡️ Preventive Measures Recovering stolen money is difficult, hence experts urge people to take preventive measures such as regularly checking financial accounts, using two-factor authentication, and limiting the information you share. ➡️ Solutions from OpenAI In response to scandals involving AI-generated content in criminal schemes, OpenAI has developed a tool to detect deepfakes. Additionally, the company plans to implement tamper-resistant watermarks to mark digital content like photos or audio. As AI fraud escalates, unfortunately, reputational risks could potentially nullify all advancements and investments in the AI sector. Be cautious and follow expert recommendations to protect yourself from scammers using artificial intelligence.
