Great prod Annie Chiang that sustainability and resilience should be considered in tandem and needn't be thought to be in constant opposition to each other.
If done well, they can be synergistic as you illustrate with the Central Valley project example!
Two fantastic articles by Annie Chiang (part 2) and Greg Heppner, AIA NCARB (part 1) on the resilience of our healthcare infrastructure. Both really insightful and full of practical advice for healthcare facility leaders.
"Any health organization can take foundational steps to improve the resilience of its buildings and infrastructure, whether renovating or constructing new."

For many years, U.S. Green Building Council's #LEED has encouraged the concept of occupant health as part of a holistic approach to green building. The idea is getting ever more attention in the post-COVID world. It's easy to get caught up thinking about all the systems and materials in a building, but let's not forget about the most important thing: the people inside. #HealthyBuildings
Over 60% of each #LEED v4 rating system is associated with occupant health. Human health is a longstanding value of the green building movement, and there are proven linkages between green building strategies and health determinants.

👩⚕️Home energy efficiency is not only about money and comfort. It is first and foremost about health!
🏡Several research programs have found a correlation between a home’s energy efficiency and its occupants’ health. For instance, the Healthy Homes Program research conducted 2 years ago by the Victorian government:
“A relatively minor upgrade (average $2,809) had wide-ranging benefits over the winter period. […] Importantly, the upgrade was associated with benefits in health, with reduced breathlessness and improved quality of life, particularly its mental health and social care aspects.”
This research also showed that for every $1 saved in energy, more than $10 were saved in healthcare costs over time thanks to the upgrades!🏥 🤑

If your healthcare organization disappeared overnight, would it be missed? For hospital-based health systems that provide essential medical care to lower-income patients in urban areas in the United States, the answer is a resounding yes. These organizations not only care for marginalized populations, they also train new generations of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
Yet, enormous financial and operational forces jeopardize the survival of these institutions. To sustain U.S. health care for the long term, businesses and governments as well as these health systems themselves must be frank about the challenges — and must innovate deftly to find solutions that can actually be implemented.
Many healthcare systems across the country are tackling energy efficiency and decarbonization head on, realizing the financial, operational, and environmental benefits. For some, it's not so easy. We're here to help.
