#Waterfronts are where our industrially impacted past can intersect with a future of enhanced public access and ecological improvements. SmithGroup Senior Coastal Engineer Timothy Wagner, P.E.’s presentation at Battelle’s international Sediment Conference will highlight how successful #PublicEngagement strategies can create plans that transform former contaminated sites into restored, legacy spaces for the community. https://lnkd.in/g72xuG4s #BattelleSediments2025 #brownfields #restoration #ecology #sustainability #revitalization #DesignABetterFuture

🌱 Exciting News! Our paper, led by Heather Neilly, is now published in 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺. 𝗔𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁: We applied 13,500 m² of coarse woody debris ("branching") across 15 sites in southern Australia. Over 4 years, we found that branching significantly improved vegetation cover and species richness, especially in the most degraded areas. Reptile abundance and richness also increased, though mammals were less affected. This study shows that branching is an effective restoration tool in drylands, enhancing vegetation recovery and providing habitat for small vertebrates. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: • Experimental evidence for the use of complex woody debris as a multipurpose restoration tool to facilitate vegetation recovery and provide habitat for small vertebrates. • Proven to be highly effective in drylands and severely degraded areas, where other active restoration methods are often risky and prone to failure. 🔗 Check out the paper here: https://lnkd.in/gjcbFm7s #Ecology #Restoration #Research #AridLandscapes #WoodyDebris #Grazing

💡 With more people realizing the benefits of restoring mangroves, there has never been a more crucial time for sharing evidence-based best practices. 🤔 If you’re wondering: Where do I begin in designing a restoration project? What stakeholders should be involved? How do I secure funding? Can I tie in restoration efforts with a carbon credit programme? Then you need to read the Mangrove Restoration Best Practice Guidelines produced by Global Mangrove Alliance and Blue Carbon Initiative. We’re proud to have supported the team on these guidelines, sharing the principles of our Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) method. Following these guidelines ensures your projects are rooted in science and driven by the needs of local communities. Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e-NT7iCy #MangroveRestoration #Ecology

Rewilding to some may seem a 'messy chaos' however, it offers an exciting, natural, and positive way to restore balance to ecosystems. Our latest article provides an understanding of rewilding as an approach to conservation, what's involved, and how ecologists can play an important role in rewilding projects. #MineRehabilitation for #AquaticEcology is an intensely complicated space. With the release of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner technical paper on Aquatic ecosystem in post mining landscapes and subsequent implications for best practices, its timing arrives at a crucial moment, as the industry begins to struggle with how effective rehabilitation on the aquatic systems can be achieved. Dive into the insights from Associate Aquatic Ecologist Andrea McPherson as she explores the innovative solutions and best practices for aquatic ecosystem rehabilitation! https://lnkd.in/gZTpgF5F #MineRehabilitation #Rehabilitation #AquaticEcology #Ecology #CreatingOpportunities

Our next Bug-of-the-Month article focuses on the last of a series of articles describing the four-dimensional nature of lotic ecosystems. Previous articles have included the longitudinal dimension (upstream–downstream); the lateral dimension (interaction between a stream channel and the adjacent floodplain); and the vertical dimension (interaction between surface and ground water flow). This article is about the fourth dimension—time—and how it interacts with the previous three as they interact with each other. Do you have ponds or ditches on or near your site and not sure whether your development will affect great crested newts? If you can’t use the District Licensing route, it’s high time to reach out to ecologists to schedule an environmental DNA (eDNA) survey, to check for great crested newt evidence (and to avoid costly project delays!). Don’t get caught out by the short survey season - eDNA can only be done between 15.4. - 30.6., AND if it is positive, you will also need great crested newt population estimate surveys to inform your mitigation strategy, planning application, and eventually, the licence application. The follow up surveys need to be carried out between mid-March and June, with multiple survey visits (a minimum of four and a maximum of six). As at least half of the surveys have to be conducted between mid-April and mid-May, the survey season is really time-constrained. hashtag #WildwoodEcology #ecology #greatcrestednewt #eDNA #pond #survey #development #planning #project
