Car production falls as factories continue model transition. In August 2024, UK car production fell by 8.4%, with 41,271 units produced, largely due to factory shutdowns and transitioning to new models, particularly electric vehicles. Domestic production dropped by 19.8%, while exports saw a smaller 5.9% decline, with the EU remaining the largest export market. Despite a 25.9% fall in electrified vehicle production, long-term growth is expected as new models roll out. Year-to-date production is down 8.5%, though the industry remains optimistic due to significant investments and upcoming government strategies to support competitiveness.

Could new car supply be in trouble? 🚗 UK car production took a hit in July 2024, dropping by 14.4% with 65,478 vehicles rolling off the assembly lines, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The decline stems from model changeovers and temporary supply chain challenges. Despite these hurdles, over 80% of July's output was destined for export, with the EU leading the way at 51.3%, followed by the US (17.6%), China (8.6%), Turkey (5.5%), and Japan (3.1%). However, export volumes overall were down by 16.3%. While year-to-date domestic production is up by 14.8%, export volumes year-to-date have decreased by 14.3%. Yet, the UK automotive sector remains strong, with the total output value still exceeding £20 billion, comparable to last year. This resilience highlights the enduring value of the UK automotive industry, even amid market fluctuations. What are your thoughts on these statistics? Let us know in the comments! 💭
