Top 3 "#benefits" that aren't a benefit. 🎗️ 1️⃣ "28 Days holiday including BH" - Sorry, that's literally the national minimum.... 2️⃣ "Pension" - Yeah, that's also mandatory. (If you contribute more as an employer, say so! That's great and genuinely a benefit!) 3️⃣ "Your birthday off". Being somewhat facetious here as it is a benefit, but honestly, just add an additional day to the annual leave package. The exact date might not be ideal for a leave day A lot of others that could be on this list, I would say are benefits, but subjective. Have a I missed any? I had a client today ask about negotiating maternity leave with her job offer. I'm against it. Maternity benefits shouldn't be mixed in with compensation conversations. Compensation is about trading resources. Maternity benefits are about values. If you want to ask about maternity benefits, it should be tacked on at the last second, after compensation has been agreed to. And then it should be framed as "making sure our expectations are aligned" ... a frame around values, not compensation.

Business-related PSA: If one of your colleagues is out on maternity leave, and you take that opportunity to talk trash about them in order to gain an advantage in your own career, then not only are you a terrible person, but also clearly not worthy of whatever promotion and recognition you’re chasing. If you can’t stand on your own merits without tearing down someone else who isn’t there to defend themselves, then you aren’t the high performer you think you are. You’re a coward.

If you think your employees do NOT need support when they return to work following maternity leave, please read this! These are the words of a mum who had returned to work 4 months ago following maternity leave. "I was naive as I assumed it was going to be easy returning to work after maternity leave. It was THE HARDEST THING I have EVER DONE. It is the BIGGEST THING to happen to me. It is like I am expected to return to work and PRETEND it didn't happen." * Pretend that I haven't changed - because I have! * Pretend that I don't have a new identity - I do! I am now a mammy and I am a working parent, which I have NEVER been before. * Pretend that it is easy - it is not, it is hard! * Pretend that taking a year out of the business hasn't impacted on my confidence, because it 100% has! Pretending is exhausting and so is not having support when you return to work. So if you have a team member who has returned to work following maternity leave, do the right thing for them and for the company and give them the support they need right now.
