Without a doubt, innovation is key in our battle against deforestation🌳At SMURF, we're proudly aligned with the FAO strategy: "Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World". 🍃 SMURF is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management amidst environmental pressures. Through our innovative solutions, we're conserving Europe's forests for future generations. We're fully committed to leveraging tech for sustainable forestry. Today, at #ForestsDay, let's remember the 6 reasons to treasure our forests, by FAO Forestry. "Our future depends on preserving and sustainably managing our forests". 1️⃣ Forests cover 31 % of Earth's land surface 2️⃣ Forests are vital to achieving sustainable agrifood systems. Nearly 1/3 of the global population depends on forest goods and services for livelihoods, food security and nutrition. 3️⃣ Forests provide almost 75 % of the world's accessible freshwater. 4️⃣ The forest sector generates jobs for at least 33 million people 5️⃣ Forests are vast carbon sinks and sources of sustainable wood, making them key to mitigating climate change. 6️⃣ Forests are essential for the conservation of biodiversity. Forests are home to 80 % of amphibian species, 75 % of bird species and 68 % of mammal species.

🌳🇪🇺 The SMURF project is addressing a critical challenge in European forestry: fragmentation. With over 16 million forest owners across Europe, coordinating sustainable management practices is complex. Our project is developing tailored solutions for small forest properties, focusing on Closer to Nature Sylviculture practices, ecosystem services promotion, and innovative business models. Together, we can ensure the health and productivity of Europe's diverse forest landscapes. #SustainableForestry #SMURF #EuropeanForests 🗺️ European (European Economic Area countries) forest management strategies map showing a possible route of strategizing forest management. Why do we favour sustainable forestry rather than primary forests? 🤔 This is a question we are often asked, which is not without merit. 💡 Indeed, primary forests, also known as virgin forests, are ecosystems of great richness and crucial importance for life on Earth. The renowned botanist Francis Hallé and the Francis Hallé Association for Primary Forests (Association Francis Hallé pour la forêt primaire) have provided much material to understand their complexity. We fully support the idea of recreating a primary forest in Europe, although it is not our mission and the primary work of our forest team. What is a primary forest? 👉 By definition, a primary or virgin forest is free from human intervention. It undergoes no silvicultural action. Essentially, it's left untouched to grow and develop itself. EcoTree's work: 📌 Our mission is to plant new forests and manage existing forests in Europe, following mixed-species continuous cover forestry principles, with a dual ecological and economic objective. 📌 We act locally to restore forest #ecosystems, promote and preserve the local #biodiversity, help forests resist pressures exerted by #climatechange, and develop the local economy. 🦋 We are also developing biodiversity preservation projects. For example, we are creating senescence patches in dedicated areas of our forests, where we intervene as little as possible, letting nature take its course. The sole objective of those projects is to preserve small patches of wild nature in a landscape entirely shaped by human hands. Natural regeneration in senescence patches takes a very long time. So, in 800 years, perhaps we can discuss them as primary forest areas. One type of forest does not exclude the other. Every forest effort that promotes more nature and forests on the planet is one step closer to a more sustainable future. 🌍 #reforestation #afforestation #nbs

*WORLD FORESTRY DAY* Today, we celebrate the beauty and importance of our forests, which are vital for the health of our planet and all living beings. Forests provide us with clean air, water, biodiversity, and are crucial in combating climate This year's theme is ‘Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World’ as chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF). The theme reflects the critical role that forests play in the world of innovation and vice versa. It also aims to highlight the pressing challenges that are making it difficult to preserve forests and the solutions to promote forest conservation and sustainable utilisation. On this day, let's pledge to protect and preserve our forests for future generations. Plant a tree, support sustainable forestry practices, or simply take a walk in the woods and connect with nature. Together, we can make a difference! #FRIN 🌍

24.7 acres (that’s 100,000 sqm if you prefer using the metric system). That’s the forest area we preserved thanks to your likes! 🥳 That’s a promise we made for our end-of-year campaign, so here goes: All your likes - comments - shares of the "great business coalition" operation are converted into square metres of forest preserved (for 1 year). Nos Grandes Forêts, a French mission-led company, will be maintaining 10 hectares of forest in the Ile-de-France region (at its own expense)! A huge thank you to them for this wonderful gesture! (https://lnkd.in/gyNFfhME) Situated near Fontainebleau, the forest in question is called the "forêt des remises" and is located at Cannes-écluse (see the small satellite photo). This 26-hectare forest is 100% deciduous (oak, chestnut, locust, ash) 🌳 A biodiversity audit and a simple management plan are currently being implemented by a forestry expert (Jean-Jacques Laurent). According to the initial diagnosis drawn up by the expert, there are major needs: 1. Improvement of coppice-type stands to form coppice under forest. This will involve targeted thinning only of small trees of low value and low volume, allowing the chosen trees to grow peacefully. 2. Reforesting around 4 hectares of the former poplar grove. Maintaining a degraded forest is a heavy but necessary investment to ensure its proper development, its biodiversity and its capacity to store CO² in the long term. For information: 10 hectares of forest store 50 tonnes of CO2 per year (on average) according to ADEME. Effective maintenance can increase this figure by almost 30%! In short, you didn't like us in vain! So thanks again for a great end to the year 🥰 We'll keep you posted on our progress with this project! In the meantime, let's help this forest kick some greenhouse gases by deploying major innovations for the climate. We need your help to make things happen: team-planet.com
