Prior to leading Programs/Projects, I worked as a code developer for three years. An underlying principle was to ensure there were no bugs, prior to code going live. In the interest of 'time-to-market', that principle degraded over the years. Google's own researchers are telling you that AI is now the leading vector of disinformation. And even worse: we may be severely undercounting the problem. We would, of course, be remiss if we didn't mention the importance of Brandolini's Law when thinking about this problem: "The amount of energy needed to refute bullsh*t is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it." Brandolini's Law is often referred to more vernacularly as The Bullsh*t Asymmetry Principle. So Google itself is warning us that AI is unleashing a wave of bullsh*t of epic proportions, one which - following Brandolini's Law - will be impossible for society to dig itself out of. AI systems are requiring larger and larger pools of data to learn from. The available pool of data is now getting too small, and at the same time, some data owners are blocking access to their information. The industry's need for high-quality text data could outstrip supply within two years. Yesterday we celebrated the Parliament’s final vote on the #AIAct. Today the #Commission is already working towards fairer and safer regulation of #AI. Pending the entry into force of AI Act, the #DSA is already in place to address #AIrelatedrisks in this important #electoral year! The European Commission has just formally sent #requestsforinformation under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to Bing, Facebook, Google Search, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and X, to provide more information on their respective mitigation measures for risks linked to #generativeAI on their services.

The recent spectacular fail of Google Gemini’s image generation tool may reveal a dark potential within LLM’s for censorship that everyone, regardless of political affiliation, should be concerned about. That is the message in the Time opinion piece linked below. Takeaways: 1) Gemini’s recently documented refusal to generate images of white people appears to be an overreaction by programmers to concerns of bias. 2) This glitch points however to a much larger and more serious issue: the fear of AI filling the world with “harmful” content could lead to installation of guardrails that become “instruments of hiding information, enforcing conformity, and automatically inserting pervasive, yet opaque, bias.” 3) “GenAI should augment, not replace, human reasoning. This critical function is hampered when guardrails designed by a small group of powerful companies refuse to generate output based on vague and unsubstantiated claims of ‘harm.’ Instead of prodding curiosity, this approach forces conclusions upon users without verifiable evidence or arguments that humans can test and assess for themselves.” 4) “As the integration of GenAI becomes ubiquitous in everyday technology it is not a given that search, word processing, and email will continue to allow humans to be fully in control…Imagine a world where your word processor prevents you from analyzing, criticizing, lauding, or reporting on a topic deemed ‘harmful’…” 5) Early investigations under the EU’s Digital Services Act suggest that regulators may focus heavily on potential harms rather than benefits of new technology, which might create strong incentives for AI companies to create restrictive guardrails that stunt human knowledge, reasoning, and creativity. 6) Guardrails to protect AI users from real and serious harms are needed—but they should not “prevent the ability of humans to think for themselves and make more informed decisions based on a wealth of information from multiple perspectives. Lawmakers, AI companies, and civil society should work hard to ensure that AI-systems are optimized to enhance human reasoning, not to replace human faculties with the ‘artificial morality’ of large tech companies.” Dave’s take: As AI regulation begins to be implemented, officials would do well to take steps to actively avoid the trap of unintended consequences. The authors of this piece point out that to the extent regulators seek to aggressively extinguish “harms” that may be vaguely defined, developers are incentivized to overreact on the side of avoiding any conceivable harm-which may inadvertently create increasing waves of censorship.
