The FAA is evaluating recommendations from the Mental Health and Aviation Medical Clearances Rulemaking Committee, which aims to reduce barriers preventing pilots and air traffic controllers from reporting mental health issues. The committee, established in December 2023, includes members from aviation industry trade associations, pilot and controller organizations, academia, and medical professionals. These efforts build on the FAA’s ongoing mental health priorities for aviation personnel. It does not happen often - but when it does, you'd better be prepared.... this is a guiding principle in medicine and aviation alike. Cardiac Arrest and CPR are, thankfully, rare events in international air ambulance operations. However, if it happens, ROSC is difficult to achieve and death in-flight is a possible, even likely, outcome. Arriving in a foreign country with a deceased patient on-board is an unsettling scenario for most aeromedical professionals. We just published an open access paper in Air Medical Journal that might help to be a bit more prepared - hoping that you never need the information provided in this publication. https://lnkd.in/ejA_H843

Being inside what is equivalent to an airborne ambulance can be overwhelming. From continuous radio headset communication to hand signals to the jarring effects of turbulence on an #aircraft full of the injured and ill, it all might seem rather chaotic to the inexperienced. But within the chaos, there's peace to be found. #Aeromedical personnel bring order to the chaos by knowing how to respond to emergencies. These specially trained members can precisely locate their supplies, provide critical care, reassurance, and comfort to patients, and ensure their safety. This is the #mission of the #908thAeromedicalEvacuationSquadron. Certified medical technicians and flight nurses operate in specialized aircraft equipped with medical configurations and deliver in-flight care to critically ill or injured service members while transporting them to medical treatment facilities worldwide. "The problem with the RVSM airspace was that it was taking us approximately 15 minutes to climb to 30, 000 plus feet with the King Air. And whatever efficiencies we were getting from being high was being lost in the climb." ~ Kevin Schaub - COO CanWest Air After adding the Full EPIC Kits to their Air Ambulance fleet, they saved 150 hours of flight time and half a million liters of fuel a year. Introducing GRILLE's Medical Cabin 🚑✈️ Together with Prof. Dr. med. Peter Biberthaler, AVILUS prototyped a medical cabin that ensures medical care in all transport phases. ⛑️ Pre-flight, it offers all the medical equipment needed by the Bravo first responder according to tactical combat casualty care (#TCCC). Herein, special emphasis is placed on bleeding and respiratory control. 🩺 During the flight, it supports the evacuation by monitoring the patient's vital parameters and offering video call-based psychological care throughout the journey. ✅ Post-flight, the cabin is easily swappable to ensure minimal downtime, maximum hygiene, and fast decontamination. Ensure safe and efficient evacuation by integrating the GRILLE into your operations. There was a pile of research up to a couple years ago which referenced the "National Emergency Airway Registry." When I try to find the actual registry itself, or a pathway by which one might access and query such registry, I run into walls. Can #EmergencyMedicine LinkedIn maybe help me out? Where is the NEAR and how does one get to it? #Airway #NationalEmergencyAirwayRegistry #EmergencyAirway #EMAirway #Critcare #criticalcare #critcareairway #airwayresearch #QI #airwayQI

#Mobilitymoment Mid-Flight Medical Emergency During my flight back to the U.S. from the Middle East, a medical emergency occurred midair. Key points: 1. The call for medical assistance was communicated via a flash on the TV screens, rather than an announcement. (What if medical professionals were sleeping or not paying attention?) 2. When the flight crew accessed the medical kit to check a passenger's vitals, they discovered that the blood pressure monitor was malfunctioning and had to search for new batteries. (While batteries can fail at any time, this is something that should be regularly checked to ensure functionality during emergencies.) Although flying is generally safe, we must avoid complacency and diligently uphold best practices. Let's ensure that our friendly skies remain as safe as possible. Wishing the passenger a speedy recovery. #flight #airline #aviation #medical #emergency #transportation #bestpractices Transportation is Mobility, and Mobility is Freedom ™

Did you know? 🚁 In addition to ensuring the safety of passengers, patients, and crew, air ambulance pilots must also take into account the presence of individuals and property in the surrounding area during take-off and landing. When an air ambulance lands or takes off, it can create a significant breeze known as downwash due to the airflow generated by the helicopter's rotor blades. 💨 The average helicopter downwash speed can vary depending on factors such as the size and type of helicopter. Helicopter downwash speeds typically range from around 15 to 60 miles per hour (24 to 97 kilometres per hour). In some cases, particularly with larger helicopters or in certain conditions, downwash speeds can exceed these averages. Prior to landing, air ambulance pilots inspect the landing area, assessing size, obstacles, and bystander proximity. They remain vigilant for any potential dangers, including loose objects and curious onlookers. 🚁⚠️ So remember, if you spot a helicopter trying to land keep well clear. Move as far away as possible and do not approach the helicopter unless the pilot invites you! #AirAmbulance #downwash #didyouknow
