The manufacturing industry has a big problem…according to a study by Deloitte, the industry needs to fill as many as 3.8 million jobs over the next decade. And guess what, these jobs will need to be filled by Gen Z’ers. This brings me to another challenge for our industry. We have an image problem when it comes to Gen Z. Our industry has historically done a bad job of advertising all the incredible cutting-edge technology we use each and every day. Younger generations have an antiquated view of what working in manufacturing is really like and it’s our job to show them just how far we’ve come. I recently had a great conversation with Paul J. Noble for his latest Forbes article about the top 4️⃣ things manufacturers need to do to appeal to Gen Z and help bridge the labor gap. 1️⃣ First, let's talk retention. I keep hearing from customers that Gen Z doesn’t stick around, but this isn’t just a manufacturing issue—it’s everywhere. Job-hopping is the norm, it’s now how people advance their careers, and we must adapt to this new reality. 2️⃣ Tech expectations are another big one. It feels fundamentally wrong when Gen Z uses advanced tech in their personal lives but outdated systems at work. They expect intuitive, seamless experiences, and we need to deliver on that. 3️⃣ Showcase the larger mission. Younger generations need to feel connected to a greater purpose at work. Show them the unrivaled possibilities in manufacturing where they can create parts for space missions or transform the automotive and aerospace industries. 4️⃣ Finally, let's embrace grassroots innovation. If our systems feel outdated, let's change that by listening to young people. Their fresh perspectives can help us work better with technology and stay ahead of the curve. Let’s embrace change and empower Gen Z to see the exciting possibilities of a career in manufacturing! What do you consider the most underrated industry? I think it might be manufacturing 🏭 Manufacturing is the backbone of our society. Our food, our clothes, the materials our homes are made of, the tools they were made with, our phones and laptops- every physical thing around us that isn’t a tree or a bush is made by manufacturers (and sometimes those are too). In an ideal world, our best and brightest youth would be evenly distributed across sectors, but studies show that college students are less interested in careers in the manufacturing sector. Why? 🛋️ My armchair theory (for the US) is that outsourcing jobs and shutting down factories lowered confidence in the manufacturing sector when it had been one of the hottest sectors to work in. Meanwhile, the technology sector starting taking off. In the ensuing decades, parents have been increasingly encouraging their children to study computer science and get jobs in technology, and the talent supply chain that had flowed freely into manufacturing was never restored. Especially now that anyone from anywhere can learn to code from their bedroom. Meanwhile, most of the executives in manufacturing remember the promise of what it would mean to work in manufacturing when they started and think it’s a difference in the younger generations when really it’s a difference in awareness and context. Ragu Athinarayanan, Thorsten Wuest, Jeff Winter, Rita Shor, Anne Greer, Dr. Federico Sciammarella, Berardino Baratta, Chandra Brown, John Dyck, Ira Moskowitz, Mark Johnson, Chris Luecke, Jake Hall, Aaron Prather, WILL HEALY III, and Carolyn L.–you’re the real experts in manufacturing, what do you think? #manufacturing #leadership

Here are 5 mistakes that I've seen made when manufacturing companies try to scale(I have some ideas to follow on how to solve them...later this week): Mistake #1: Neglecting process automation which leads to inefficiencies in manufacturing operations, higher costs, and lower output of product quality. Mistake #2: Ignoring technological advancements which causes organization to fall behind expectations with current clients and lose ground to competitors. Mistake #3: Inadequate development of workforce especially key technical personnel and leads to the loss of key internal employees leading to reduction in quality of output. Mistake #4: Disjointed supply chain management leading to part delays and increased costs that bring on customer satisfaction issues. Mistake #5: Focusing on short-term gains over long-term strategy leading to strategic misalignment leading to lost opportunity. What have you seen in your career? Post in comments. #manufacturing #3DPrinting #processimprovement

Our team feels fortunate to be working on several exciting projects. 🤗 We possess knowledge that can assist even the most demanding product development projects. To share our insights and help more people, we are publishing a series of five articles regarding the industrialization of our era. Don't miss out on the second part of the series, which discusses the "individual steps of industrialization". Each step, from Planning to Production, is crucial to the growth and learning process. Often, the challenge isn't in the steps themselves but in recognizing how deeply intertwined they are. Misjudgment here can cost more than just time—it can impact the entire project. Let's commit to navigating these steps with the precision and attention they require. Who's with me? https://lnkd.in/dsqbFgwF Virinco #productdevelopment #electronicsManufacturing #industrialization

As much as I dislike the cold here in the Midwest, it is pretty to look at, but also fun to play in with the right company. My boys put their snowman building skills to the test, and I’m quite impressed with the emotion they were able to capture with string, sticks, and wine corks (don’t ask where they got those from 🙋🏻♀️🍷😂). “Meaghan, this isn’t a LinkedIn post.” Correction: this is a #manufacturing and #engineering post, so it is a LinkedIn post. 😝 Exposing kids to building things with different materials and allowing them to use their imagination is engineering and manufacturing 101. ✅ Creativity is essential for top-notch innovation. Allowing kids to run away with their imaginations will allow them to do the same when they’re not so little anymore. There’s other resources for you to try at home to get your kids to start building and creating. Ann Wyatt inspired me to get a #3dprinter for my boys. Alicia Gilpin (Ali G) has Kids PLC Kits for schools. Kara Branch, MBA, LSSGB has really cool #STEM kits you can get delivered to your house. So get creative today, and go have some fun with your kiddos!
