With two-factor authentication the norm, gaining access to certain websites, social media accounts, email marketing platforms, and more has become more complicated and time-consuming than people realize. It often starts out simple - someone types in the official password and then they reach the screen where it says “We’ve sent a 6-digit code to” a phone number or email. Easy, right? That’s when the games begin. Whose phone number is that? What email is that? Does that email even exist anymore? Set your team up for success with tips on using two-factor authentication without sacrificing your sanity. A cloud giant fails to deliver reliable email services - and shows how little they care about their customers versus the bottom line. Recently, massive spam and phishing campaigns have been sent from a popular email platform. It happens due to how easy it is for malicious players to establish themselves on it or penetrate businesses using it. Many business across the world using standard, best practice email protection policies have been affected, as emails are being rejected as a consequence. With a history of focusing mostly on profitability and squeezing any potential revenue stream out of an industry still unprepared to deliver security across the board, the cloud company is showing yet again complete lack of responsibility for its customer's wellbeing. Did we make a mistake when we embraced cloud services and gave a corporate entity control over our vital communication services? Are giant technology corporations really beneficial to our businesses? What do you think? https://lnkd.in/gcByymvu

As of February 2024, if you aren’t running sender integrity controls (SPF and/or DKIM) *as well as* a legitimate DMARC record, Google and Yahoo will start blocking sending servers of 5,000+ messages per day. To Google and Yahoo, I say: “It’s about time!” There are a few myths about DMARC that have been floating around for years. Myth: DMARC is an email filtering control. Truth: DMARC is not filtering; it’s brand protection. It lets organizations set the “rules of the road” on who is allowed to impersonate the sending domain, and optionally gives them visibility to know what parties are sending on behalf of the org. While DMARC enables filters to make better decisions on processing email, it’s not a filtering control. Myth: DMARC means I need to purchase [DMARC enforcement product]. Truth: You can implement a DMARC record at no cost to the organization, and can even enforce it. However, you may need a DMARC service to interpret DMARC reports and help with the steps to get to enforcement… especially if there’s a history of shadow IT. Some companies only need these services in the short term to remedy the sanctioning of senders, especially if they aren’t spinning up a lot of third party mail senders and a centralized team (InfoSec or IT) is involved in procurements. Myth: Only large companies need DMARC. Truth: While Google and Yahoo are working with a high minimum of messages (5k a month) to require DMARC, I expect this number to go down with time. DMARC is a whole lot easier to set up when organizations are small, and it’s a lot easier to manage ensuring senders have either DKIM or SPF when the company is nimble. Finally, because DMARC is more about brand protection than filtering, it will help protect a company’s reputation, making them much harder to impersonate… which ought to be important for ANY company. https://lnkd.in/g8NbNedw

🚨 Privacy Alert for Email Users 🚨 Recent reports from Proton, the Switzerland-based secure email service, have cast a spotlight on Microsoft's new Outlook for Windows app, dubbing it less an email client and more a "data collection service." Here's what ProtonMail claim: ➡️ Massive Data Sharing: Proton's findings suggest that the Outlook app shares data with an astonishing 772 advertisers, confirmed through user agreements seen by European users under GDPR rules. ➡️ Complex User Agreements: The agreements ostensibly designed to inform users about their data being shared come with individual opt-out toggles per advertiser and privacy policies that seem intentionally convoluted. ➡️ Broad Data Collection: Beyond common email app data, Microsoft is reportedly collecting a wide array of personal information ranging from names, passwords, and demographic data to device usage, location data, and even content from emails. ➡️ Opt-Out Hurdles: Users in the UK have access to a "list of advertising partners" but face a tedious process to opt-out of ads, having to navigate a toggle for each advertising company. Of course, ProtonMail are in the business of persuading customers to move away from Outlook, but their claims seem credible and are attracting the attention of CISOs and security folks.
